Real Chang Ning IS the guy they brought in during episode 4 😂. Real Chang Ning's dad, Chang Haosheng (CHS) made his steward secretly take real Chang Ning away way before the massacre for his protection.

After the first day where ML's fake identity was almost exposed, ML snuck in to see the real Chang Ning and showed him the plaque from CHS. Because of that, real Chang Ning trusted ML as he knew his Dad also trusted him and that there must be more to the Chang massacre.

Therefore, on the second day of interrogation, real Chang Ning didn't expose ML and said ML was the real Chang Ning so ML could continue with whatever his plans were. In their goodbye talks, ML promised real Chang Ning he would avenge CHS and that was good enough for real Chang Ning who went off to live an ordinary life. He was always weak and powerless and never wanted to be part of the martial arts world anyways. And that's what his Dad wanted for him.

EXTRA SPOILER, this may not happen in drama, but in the novel, years and years later, ML and FL are at a fair and they happened to notice a happy couple with kids and an elderly man (real Chang Ning's steward) passing by and both FL & ML recognized the man as real Chang Ning. So it's implied that Chang Ning had a happy ending!

No one knows his Dad has a twin yet, including ML.
ML will find that out later, there's a whole backstory on why it's not commonly known based on the novel (and drama will very likely follow the same process of discovery later).

SML was never engaged to FL? SML and ML both wanted to get FL to break off her engagement to ZYQ since they were in love with her. To my knowledge SML never regretted his decision to break up with Qi Lingbo since he was never in love with her.

FL & ML were staying at an inn. The clans, including FL's fiance (ZYQ) were also in the same inn for a banquet. So of course, both ML and SML were stewing in jealousy seeing FL around her fiance.

Independently, ML and SML went back to their own rooms and plotted how to break up the couple. SML debated if he should try to break them up, but decided against it and was too righteousness to try and use ZYQ's cousin against him. And he KNEW that ML's jealousy would make him do something drastic any second now. So his plan was to do nothing, wait for ML to break them up, then sweep in when FL's pissed off at ML.

Meanwhile, ML debated with his two sidekicks if he should wait for SML to break them up, but he's a man of action and couldn't sit by and do nothing.
His initial thoughts were to drug ZYQ with an aphrodisiac and tempt him with a courtesan at a nearby brothel and make FL catch them in the act. But he figured FL would be mad at him if she found out he planned that, and he wasn't sure if ZYQ would fall for that anyways. He knew from rumours that ZYQ is in love with his cousin so they decided to use that angle to make him break off his own engagement.

FL and ZYQ went to the market, and ZYQ got seperated. ML's plan involved a series of of plays around town to pull at ZYQ's emotions (spiked with a bit of hallucination powder in the air to make him feel super emotional) in which ZYQ ran into situations where he saw: 1) a rich girl bully a poor girl, 2) another girl was in love with her cousin but being forced to marry another man, 3) another girl was accused of adultery by her drunk husband for being in love with her cousin and in the end, she regretted her choice to not marry her cousin years earlier and 4) ML actually pretended to be a shop owner that ZYQ went into and through giving "advice," he made ZYQ realize he was in love with his cousin, he wanted a sweet and quiet wife/life and it would be worth him breaking his engagement (ML was also offering ZYQ snacks that he secretly spiked with courage powder as well! 😂)

Emboldened, ZYQ went back to find FL, and begged on his knees to break off their engagement as he was in love with his cousin, and he wanted a gentle & virtuous wife so they would not suit. She was upset for being called out for not being gentle
or virtuous, they argued back and forth and she kicked him out, end of engagement! She was so embarrassed about the whole situation, she told those around her to hide the news for now.

Later that day, SML and Qi Lingbo also broke off their engagement and ML overhead from his room. ML was actually pretty gleeful. But Shangguan Haonan reminded ML that if FL and SML both broke off their own engagements... what's stopping them from getting together, lol. So ML proceeded to throw one final step in his plan and had his men spread rumours specifically about ZYQ begging on his knees and breaking off his engagement 😂

FL ran off to yell at ML as she suspected he totally had a hand in her broken engagement. He admitted to pulling at ZYQ's emotions but that the final decision was his own, and told FL she was never going to be happy being with a man who loved someone else and would always be was scared & resentful of being weaker than her. He accused her of being insincere with her feelings, just wanting ZYQ for his wealth, family, and having someone who would be easy to manipulate. And ML did also admit to spreading the news of her broken engagement all over town. OH, FL WAS PISSED! She even swung at him and sliced him with her sword (he let her)! He managed to talk her down and enticed her to go away with him to seek clues to the Chang family massacre.

Of course, SML never had a chance to swoop in! ML was never gonna let anyone else have her! ❤️)

Novel MQY might have a biting kink and an unhealthy obsession with Cai Zhao's neck. He nuzzles her neck A LOT 😂
He also has a line that alludes to chains, lol.

Cai Pingshu's in love with ML's uncle. But it's alluded to that his Dad likely had feelings for her too, he just realized he met her too late.

Novel is happy ending and they have a son named Mu Yan after 3 years of marriage.

ML's dad is a twin. ML's uncle and Cai Pingshu are the tragic pairing and those two never had kids. Technically, yes LYR plays both twins from an acting/real life standpoint but from a story/drama standpoint, they're not even the same person just like twins are not the same person. Separate people and seperate love lines.

I totally agree with you, but also at the same time, this was my grip with the novel as well, and the drama so far has stuck pretty close to that characterization. FL is very much so nonchalant about the ML throughout 99% of the novel.

Before this aired, I was chatting about it with my sister that while I do like the novel and was excited for the drama-- my gosh, I hope they fix how wishy washy the FL was about the ML! In all honesty, the only reason they ended up together (in the novel) was solely because the ML wanted her soooooo bad and fought so hard to keep them together, kept coming back around to her, and practically fought off anyone else who tried to get near her. If he didn't push so hard, she literally up and left him so many times that they would have parted ways and she would probably have never given him a second thought. She absolutely would have gone on to marry Zhou Yuqi and lived the life of a rich madam. He called her heartless towards him quite a few times if I can remember and I totally agree with that.

Yes, there are enough moments scattered throughout where FL shows she does care for ML, but up until the very end, she never really actively picked him over her family, her friends, her obligations. Protect him with her life? Hell yeah, but throw him some love? Hmmmm, not so much. The ML did the bulk of the heavy lifting from a romance standpoint. I love her, but only because HE loves her and I so want him to be happy. Some dramas are just like that and to me, if I go in with that mindset, then the journey is worth it 😂

I still love and are enjoying this vastly, but there's definitely an imbalance of love throughout this drama.

If you think Cai Zhao has it bad with just ML and SML in her love triangle, her Aunt Cai Pingshu practically had a harem of men.

She did at one point like her fiance enough, Zhou Zhizhen as they grew up together. She fell for Mu Zheng Yang, but it's been highly alluded to that Mu Zheng Ming was also in love with her but knew she picked his twin, and then Qi Yunke is also in love with her.
She was in a love quintet (group of 5) and even then nobody ended up together 💔

Well, we don't know about the drama yet as it's still airing so anything goes. But if they stick to novel ending, they have a happy ending with a wedding and a small son years later that looks just like Mu Qingyan but with Cai Zhao's eyes! 😂

ML would never settle for that, he's too jealous to share her with anyone and he's never shy to show it out loud so practically everyone around him knows it too! 😂

This drama is more grounded in wuxia genre but mixed with fantasical creatures (giant birds, pythons, dragons) so he's not a demon or demonic as in a physical form like with xianxia genre where's there's actual humans/demons/immortals. He's human, but the reason Mu Qingyan and his clan are considered demons/demonic is more in their practices/cultivation methods, especially with all the bad stuff the Nies have done when they took over his clan. (ie the next arc with turning people into corpse slaves).

It's just those who practice outside of the norm, are not part of the righteous path/clans or don't care about human lives are considered "demons/demonic" or immoral.

Yes he does. Toward the middle of the novel, it comes down to Song Yuzhi vs Mu Qingyan independently debating how to get Cai Zhao to break off her engagement so they can step in.

Obviously, our possessive, jealous king Mu Qingyan indirectly persuaded Zhou Yuqi to break off the engagement and he pretty much swept Cai Zhao away on a new journey so Song Yuzhi didn't get much of a chance after that (he does still heavily feature in the last half of the novel but the love triangle somewhat died down).
Song Yuzhi also broke off his engagement w/Qi Lingbo around the same time Cai Zhao's engagement ended as well.

Lol, Mu Qingyan's friend was like: "Oh no, but if they BOTH broke off their engagements, what stopping them from getting together?!"

As soon as she got pregnant, her pregnancy made her super allergic to his scent so they had to live separately til she gave birth 😂 . That was torture for Mu Qingyan and they only snuck in short visits here and there. And even afterwards, he and his son bickered all the time and the extras end when his son is around 6 years old.
