In the vast sea of transmigration, rebirth and 2D character “制片人” awakening in C-dramas, it’s easy to dismiss another transmigration story. So what makes "Doppelgänger" stand out?
A masterful blend of cohesive writing and stellar performance by Jade Cheng in portraying Jiang Song and Jiang Jiao Jiao.
How I wish this is a long drama where the scriptwriter has the time to flesh out the plot, the storytelling and some of the characters a bit more. True to the pace of short-form dramas, "Doppelgänger" wastes no time in setting the scenes and diving into the questions it wanted to explore.
Through Jiang Song, the scriptwriter wants to explore a powerful central question: Is your fate predetermined, or can you seize your destiny with your own hands?
Through Jiang Jiao Jiao, the scriptwriter asks: How have we been living?
All this made possible with the actress amazing and brilliant portrayal. She doesn't just play two roles; she embodies two completely distinct souls. You can see the shift in her eyes, posture, and voice—the bubbly and perhaps naive energy of Jiang Jiao Jiao versus the resilient poise of Jiang Song. This stunning acting is what makes the philosophical conflict between the two feel real and deeply personal.
The supporting character, especially the second male lead is memorable too. This made the main lead feel dull in comparison. Though I love his constant sincerity and can see why Jiang Song chooses him over the second male lead.
My only harp with it is the twist after twist in the second arc of the show. While this leads to a satisfying showdown and one of the most powerful, thought-provoking questions asked, I guess I wanted some breathing space where probably only long-form story would allow.
I did watch the show with minimal spoilers and synopsis of the show. So I can’t truly verify whether one would enjoy the show without knowing too much. What I can say though, I love the originality of introducing Doppelgänger as a plot point, the questions asked by the scriptwriter and the performance of Jade Cheng.
