Without stars, Blades would have bombed. But one thing is certain that there are no action stars to succeed the martial arts genre since movie companies only care about profits.

Blades of the Guardians was written in 2015, while Pegasus was in 2019. Wuxia genre are already made to death with no new original IPs so everyone got fatigued. Also there's already a donghua made for Blades of the Guardians so no surprise it didn't make as much as other film genres.

As of August 2025, only about 16.5% of novels has been animated. That is 635/3847 chapters of both books, about 150 episodes of the donghua. Doing the math will take about 25 years. Donghua episodes are only 15 minutes each so they drag out the drama a lot.

Every live action adaption drags out to the max compare to the donghua. But this was a good adaption. It will take 25 years to finish the donghua going by the current pace. Live action will probably take 30 seasons to complete. Good luck waiting.

With a new writer and director, season 2 became a different product. It feels like this season focuses on using art to explain criminal behavior rather than how art can be used to solve cases. So the art part lost its impact this season. Also this season didn't continue from the cliffhanger of season 1 so it feels like we are watching the same characters in an alternate timeline.

Skip it if you have seen the donghua. Good thing it is short 30 minute episodes instead of the usual 40+.
