That might be true for other countries, but regarding Thai BLs back in its early years are all like 'I'm not gay, I only like you,' just as what op mentioned, which appealed to straight cis women. It's not necessarily due to censorship, but rather a reflection of the preferences of the target audience. Many of these BLs were actually adaptations of novels written by straight cis women for the same audience. So, it's more about catering to the interests of straight cis women rather than censorship. As a gay male who has been following BL content since 2017, I have firsthand experience and insights into how the BL community evolved.
