That’s totally valid and I absolutely get where you’re coming from! Honestly even the author has acknowledged that parts of the storyline are problematic, as she has written the story over 10 years ago, when she was still young and emotionally immature.

Chi Cheng shares a very deep bond with his snakes. They are more to him than just pets; they are his most treasured companions, almost sacred to him. So when someone has the audacity to possibly harm them, it‘s seen as crossing a line that‘s basically a death sentence, and all his people are aware of it. That doesn‘t mean what he allowed to happen is justified, because it‘s not. Letting someone be raped is horrifying, no matter the reason. But it does reflect how cold, obsessive and ruthless Chi Cheng really is as a character. It’s one of those moments that make you question him (and that on purpose). The scene highlights how his snakes are more valuable to him, than anyone who might bring them harm, and in later episodes you will see how this fact contributes to his character and his relationship with Wu Suo Wei.
