disappointing
first of all, the only reason i could finish this show was because of the trainees. they made this show bearable despite the treatment they went through. i started this show because of sun ying hao, neil (yoo gwan woo), duan xing xing from youth with you 3 and han gyul from produce x 101. aside from my bias towards them, the show itself is just another example of prioritizing visuals. in the beginning episodes trainees with no talent in singing, rapping, or dancing were given better chances than those who had skills. the reason those trainees were given a chance was primarily because of their visuals and cuteness (aegyo). the "cute" trainees are complimented for their cuteness rather than be criticized for their skills.
one of the guiders that i will name, lee seung gi, was especially disappointing in the show as he encouraged this idea that if the trainee was cute that it equates to having "idol presence." the way he treated certain trainees was harsher if they had foundational skills already. during a segment of an episode where the trainees were forced to dance until the guiders choose them, a trainee stood up to the harsh treatment and lee seung gi's response was disrespectful. you can find the clip somewhere and it is just so disappointing watching him gaslight the trainee. back to that segment, the trainees had to dance the theme song's dance repeatedly until the guiders were satisfied enough. they were given only 30 seconds for a break. the rounds went on in the TWENTIES. trainees who had to dance that many times were eliminated afterwards; absolutely disappointing and harsh. the show even pans to a trainee who was using one of those asthma inhalers.
i was so disappointed after finding out that sun ying hao and neil withdrawed from the show right before the last episode. their rankings were consistently high and even though there is alot of speculation around their withdrawals, i find it concerning that they would do this so close to the ending of the show. that really shows something about the show and how they treat their trainees on camera and behind the camera. think about it: 2 trainees whose rank has been in the TOP 9's before and possibly could have debuted in the group withdrawed last minute.
when they announced those who was going to debut in the new group, i was applauding for a majority of the time. i won't name them of course, but there were 3 trainees who i believe did not deserve their seats up there. it stems from bias but also from facts. they did not have foundational skills. a lot had to due because of their visuals and cuteness . yes, the trainees were improving throughout the show but you would assume the final lineup to ultimately have people with skills. that is why i was so disappointed when these trainees were announced. there were other trainees who deserved that seat so it was such a shame. there is mixed opinions about the lineup but for me, it was so disappointing. all of these trainees went through a lot on this show but still, the lineup could have been better.
as for those who were chosen to be in the group, i will cheer them on despite my personal biases. honestly don't watch the show guys but if you do, just be prepared to be disappointed a lot.
