literally the fact that this was arranged when they were children and they grew up with that idea of them having to be together. kuea was told as a child he was to be with lian. as children they were told that they were to be married when they're adults. the reason they dont break the engagement is that they were groomed into believing they're meant to be since they were kids. they were never asked as children, just as adults who were groomed. there was no choice just the illusion that they had it.
