Same here. I thought he had to die because the FL needed revenge for her parents. The reasons they made him a villian were really unconvincing. XZ claimed to be able to replace the emperor, the whole story had no respect for the emperor, court or even lives of people as they were so easily sacrificed for the "greater" good.
