Not sure of his religion but those are buddhists monks standing around. Actually buddhism, taoism and confucianism are sorta fused together for chinese. We have ancestor worship and pray to taoist gods and also buddha /guan yin. Most do not identify with a religion but religious concepts have been fused with the culture and mind set, such as kharma (buddhism), fate/heaven's will (taoism) and filial piety (confucianism) etc.. Holding incense and bowing is also a large part cultural rather than religious. The ccp is atheist but claims to protect the right to religion.
