Title Shine on Me
It does not make sense on paper that the FL has held on so tightly to the feelings for the SML, but it fails in line with the characterisation of the FL. The FL has merged her unprocessed feelings regarding her parents' divorce and her father onto the SML. The SML has the same indecisiveness regarding his first love as her father. The SML comes from humble beginnings like the father. Unprocessed emotions from our families of origin carry into the beginnings of our first romantic relationships. Additionally I think she believes the ML is too much of a catch for her. The FL's perception of herself does not match up to the reality of her presentation to the world. I think the FL's warped perception is impacted by a few things: she does not seems to be around anyone of the same economic class as her, she is highly critical of herself (the national test story, the acceptance of the lazy criticism), and she seems to be deeply affected by her childhood being sent to the countryside with her grandparents. Her family is loving, but she seemed to have a lower level of familial stability than her cousin.
