The missing years could really be the next plot for a 2nd season, but if not, at least they have provided a "happy ending" for the couple. But a second season or a special might be needed just to fill the plot holes andunresolved issues. I honestly wish that the father gets what he deserves for his behavior.

not a sad ending but they could have done better, maybe an extra episode or two could have helped
