gaaawd!! I watched this today and started researching afterwards..The poor english subs didn't help me understand…
thanks! I think the subs made it confusing hahaha but ultimately everything was explained in the end. Also, some of the characters' actions have deeper meanings ^^ it's a fun movie to watch
gaaawd!! I watched this today and started researching afterwards..The poor english subs didn't help me understand the movie if my hunches are correct...I even went looking for the real life incident in Gyeonggi-do but to no avail..So for those who were as confused as me..here is what I think happened:
When Hye Jung was little, she lived in a villa with her mom and dad, grandma and aunt was prob there too and a caretaker. Her mom was sick, dad was busy as a painter, so the caretaker brought in Soo Ryeon to work as a maid. SR and HJ became close and her father also fell in love with her. The mother knew this and started maltreating SR. However, by then, she was already pregnant. Then the mother got better, SR gave birth, but the father still loved SR, Hwan was kept in a room. Because HJ's mother and father kept fighting and SR was distancing herself, HJ was lonely and bored.
While SR was cooking, she cut her finger and HJ saw this and asked if it hurt, SR said it's okay because she's doing it for the people she loves. (here is the main reason I think why HJ "unintentionally" killed Hwan)
HJ was bored, no one would play with her and Hwan was still a baby. She loved Hwan, and seeing SR cut herself and explaining it's okay, she wanted to show it to Hwan. First, she tested it on the tofu, that's why she was slicing it on the counter. She went to her mom, prob to show it, but her mom and dad had a fight and was crying so she went up to show it to Hwan.
HJ first sliced Myodori because she liked the doll and prob wanted to explain to baby Hwan that it's okay to slice stuff. Then she poked Hwan's cheeks and it bled, but Hwan didn't cry, so little HJ must've thought it didn't hurt and Hwan understood that it's "because you do it for the people you love", so she continued and Hwan bled to death. Maybe she cut herself too or went to sleep after thinking Hwan was only asleep, but he already died. Her mom saw this and feigned ignorance. Their dad later found out and the family buried Hwan.
SR distraught, hanged herself. Their grandma placed a talisman in the room to make HJ forget what happened.
That's why Hwan aged because everyone alive forgot him, as explained by the shaman.
Why Hwan was there in HJ's college, I have yet to figure out, maybe he's a reincarnation or something...Also, they slept together...major incest there, but HJ didn't know that they're siblings at first and Hwan loved her too. Since he was technically a baby, he prob didn't still know what incest is and just went with the flow...
All strange elements in the movie was to help HJ face the truth, maybe what happened in the pension house wasn't even real and only a representation of her guilt. Which she overcame in the end by accepting the truth that she killed her brother in the past.
omo, that was too long..But I hope this explanation help decrease the confusion...If anyone here finds the real life incident that this movie was based on, please do share it :)
I had a headache watching this movie with all those bad camera angles, shaking and pointless scenes..can't even see the actors' expression well on several scenes because the camera was too far away...
