His mother is called taifei (consort) so does it mean his father is the old king? Going in circles right now!!! A lot of C-dramas didn't need all 39 0r 40 episodes and this one is one of them.
Tbh if you read the novel it has a huge plot so it does make sense for the drama to have 39 eps, but the deliberation of the storyline just really depends on the production.
