In my experience I find that some of the dramas rated in the 7's are some of my favourites ever. I loved About Time (7.5), Homemade Love Story (7.7). Melancholia is only a 7.7 and that was my favourite drama of 2021.
I will add to what I was saying earlier by stating that the drama seems to have upped the ante with regards its absurdity, what with facial palsy and the ghost turning into a full on possession now. Maybe a fourth season will reveal the whole cast to be space aliens.
I'm finding it really hard to find my feet with this series tbh, mostly due to the casting changes. I'm thankful that the main trio of female leads are still in place though, as is the masterful Moon Sung Ho as the stoic Seo Ban. I mostly miss Sung Hoon as he was so brilliant at being initially pathetic and then more likeable as his story and situation unfolded (not least his relationship with his parents).
I love this drama and watch it very much as a dark satire on the makjang with the key dramatic moments, when they finally come, hitting hard whilst balancing on a (deliberate) knife edge of poignant pathos and outright belly laughs. Every element of dialogue in the show is carefully constructed and painstakingly delivered by the cast and this, along with the shiny set design and immaculate cinematography (lots of tight focus shots and slow caresses) make this a must-watch even though I'm struggling with the cast changes.
And is it just me or have the OSTs got better as the 3 series have progressed?
oh it's a father+son figure story HAHAHA at first I thought it was BL
It has that basic trope as a very gentle framework, but the drama isn't really that at all. The star of the show is really coffee and Korean coffee culture. Each episode is essentially a little vignette with its own unique character.
I'm thinking the whole show is essentially an unofficial remake, or at least heavily inspired by the British show "Killing Eve". The characters are switched around somewhat but the most obvious building blocks are still there. You have a put-upon slightly older female lead (Sandra Oh in Killing Eve) who's always being underestimated, chasing a sociopathic yet quirky, amusing, fashion-conscious female killer (Jodie Comer, who played Han So-hee's character in the original British version of World of the Married) who despatches her victims in increasingly surreal and darkly comedic set-piece murders usually disguised as accidents. And this whole constant cat and mouse game between the pair takes place in multiple locations and set to brilliantly chosen left-field indie music choices. And what music this is! TRPP are a revelation to me, carrying the inspiration of a multitude of British bands on their shoulders; My Bloody Valentine, Curve, Jesus & Mary Chain, Ride, Slowdive. Then you have other superb stuff like Up by Hajin, Watch by SURL and SURF by INNI.
Criminally underrated indeed...I hope the ratings increase after the show finishes airing as I, and what I assume…
Why thank you! :) Set in my ways such as I am, my wife and I sit down around 9pm each evening and have a little coffee together and this goes with that sweet time very nicely.
I don't comment on too much but this delightful series is criminally underrated and it would be deeply sad if anyone didn't watch it after glancing at a 7.9 rating. It's an ideal little treat before bedtime and the episodes simply fly by.
The show is overrated and there were a lot of unnecessary scenes..
Once you know it was planned as a 2 hour movie and was "expanded" to fill a series slot, the unnecessary stuff makes sense. I agree though that this doesn't make them any less unnecessary.
i just think that the bathroom sex scene was way too disgusting , i mean if it was necessary to make one , they…
lol - I know that SG is about as far from real life as you can get, but it IS grounded in a sort of reality. And sex in real-life is generally ANYTHING but appealing to anyone other than those partaking in it. Personally, I was surprised (and a little saddened if I'm honest) that SG even had a sex scene. I watch and love K-dramas because they DON'T usually have sex scenes, so was disappointed that the producers were pandering to a western audience in this way. Perhaps I'm over-thinking it, but that's how I felt.
Key question to be asked in season 2 : How do they cope with the inevitable heavy psychological toll on the guards in being asked to constantly take human lives?
Key question to be asked in season 2: What exactly is the point of the Escher-type staircase thing you see everyone trudging around on but serves no real purpose that I can see?
Absolutely loving this one. Jung So Min is one of my favourite FLs. I first saw noticed her in Hundred Million Stars (along with Seo In Guk yay!), but then fell in love after watching the massively underrated Because This is My First Life. This role is perfect for the rumbling energy she brings, along with good comic timing and smart dramatic timing - qualities often hard to find in the same actor. And then there's Kim Ji Suk - I first noticed him as that brow-beaten SL in When the Camellia Blooms or in Another Miss OH and thought he was good as a stand-out character actor. But then I saw him in My Unfamiliar Family (probably top 3 drama of last year for me) opposite Han Ye Ri (another fave!) and saw him as a great ML, really sympathetic and sweet and brought great chemistry to a slow burn love story. I thought the opening 20 minutes of this was a bit choppy, but it settled down quickly into something that I hope will become very satisfying, with a great array of supporting characters with plentiful opportunities for comedy and drama.
This may seem a bit of an odd question, but is anyone watching this drama on Viki via the Amazon Fire TV app? When I do this, the drama is displayed across the full screen with everyone stretched up/down accordingly and looking too thin. Watching via the Viki website the drama plays at the 2:35:1 correct cinema-style ratio, with letterbox bars at the top and bottom of the screen so the problem is just with the firestick app as far as I can tell. Anyone else?? I've been watching dramas on Viki for a few years now and not seen this happen before.
Harsh but fair. :)
