I totally understand your arguments and am inclined to agree on principle, although I am personally leaning towards him being bi or straight but lgbt friendly. If he indeed felt the need to enter into a bearding arrangement I think that would be a tragedy. There are other people around him, "longterm bachelors waiting for the right woman", despite not being openly gay supposedly in longterm relationships, and he could have maybe taken that path. Whatever the truth behind this marriage the most important thing is that he is happy.
