the only negative thing that i have observed is that they've reduced/stopped those beautiful transitions from…
Let’s not forget the transition at the end of ep5 though. The way the spider webs & vines started to form as young MGT walked away from the castle while simultaneously cutting to present-day GT arriving was just wow. I think it’s been my favorite transition so far.
Wow. I didn't even notice this until you say so. Really is a foreshadow to MY and KT current relationship.
I didn’t realize until someone pointed it out either! I love how the makers are truly paying so much attention to detail because even the tiniest details can contribute so much to the show. This is why I think it’s so easy for me to rewatch episodes because I always find myself catching a new detail that I had missed from a previous watch.
I highly recommend rewatching the first scene of Sang Tae in episode 1 where he’s drawing & reciting the cartoon dialogue at the same time. If you pay close attention to the dialogue between the cartoon characters, it might actually be a huge foreshadow into MY & KT’s progressing relationship. Someone pointed this out on twitter so I thought I’d share it here too!
I also remembered reading about his character being autistic on multiple platforms but don’t actually remember it being outwardly stated? But it’s been too long since I’ve watched it to accurately recall whether it’s true or not. I also can’t wrap my head around how I was super into it back in the days. Thank goodness my tastes changed, for the better lol.
It might not be a bad rating for TVN's normal weekend dramas, but it is definitely not up to par to KSH's standards…
EDIT: Disregard what I said below because upon doing further research, I was misinformed & would never want to spread the wrong information :)
Actually, I'm pretty certain that CLOY, IC, and When the Camellia Blooms were only simultaneously airing on Netflix globally, not in South Korea. Koreans didn't have access to those shows on Netflix while they were airing. Not completely sure about Hospital Playlist though.
Regardless of the wide range of opinions on this show, Kim Soohyun did not disappoint in choosing in his comeback project. Take the TV ratings how you will, but this drama has been very strong so far. I understand it won’t be a lot of people’s cup of tea for a variety of reasons, mainly being the story, but you cannot deny the quality of the execution for the first 4 episodes.
The problem is not with her disorder. Personally, my favourite characters are the grey ones as they r more relatable…
I can totally understand where you're coming from but the obsessive behavior MY has towards KT is part of the behaviors that are associated with ASPD (antisocial personality disorder). She wants him & won't stop until she gets him, even if it means she has to go to great lengths to do so without any regard for anything else, which can be explained because of the fact that she has ASPD. This does not excuse or condone any of her behavior, it simply explains why she behaves the way she does.
You really hit the nail on the head with this. I used to be one of those people who judged a show’s success…
I would like to respectfully disagree because I feel like episode 3 was very crucial to the understanding of the characters, why they do what they do & feel what they feel.
Firstly, I feel like episode 3 really showed & explain MY & her behavior. We get to see her obsession & recklessness, along with part of her trauma. Her sleep paralysis scene was a very important scene imo because if we can't understand what's causing the characters' trauma & pain then how will we be able to understand their healing process & empathize with them?
Not only that but Kwon Ki Do's (the manic patient) scenes also did a lot for KT. We can see (@hotatoes also noted this) that KT sees himself in KKD because just like KKD who kept running away only to end back up at the psychiatric hospital, KT & his brother have also been running for so long only to end right back to the place they initially ran from. Through KKD's scenes, we also got to see KT imagine himself being free and having fun, which I hope is the start of KT's desire to want more for himself and his life other than just his brother's well-being.

I don't think it's trying to romanticize any disorders at all. And I personally think such things (mental illnesses) should be normalized because it is the "normal" for a lot of people. Everyone's "normal" is so different and we should respect that. And that is not to say I don't think there are people who are battling everyday with such disorders because I clearly realize and understand that. However, the extremely obsessive & stalking behavior that you mention is actually normal for a lot of those who have ASPD because to them, that is their normal, especially if they haven't received the proper therapy and treatment to help them understand that such behaviors aren't okay. And clearly with MY, she hasn't received that help, which is why she acts the way that she does.
Also, I think that your point about sexual abuse isn't really relevant to this discussion at all because mental illnesses/disorders and sexual abuse are two very different things.
You really hit the nail on the head with this. I used to be one of those people who judged a show’s success…
I completely understand where you're coming from and I now realize that considering the timeslot, My Mister was actually doing very well. I guess what I'm trying to say is that ratings shouldn't be the end-all-be-all for a show. But at the end of the day, it depends on what is important to the viewer because for me, ratings also matter, but they don't determine a show's success & definitely don't affect the quality.
I will also say that this is a show that is quite easy to determine whether you like it or not. I am personally very intrigued and am eagerly awaiting episodes, but I can also see how this wouldn't be a lot of people's (and knets) cup of tea.
and did i just peep someone use tv ratings as a reason for why one show is superior to the other? some of the…
You really hit the nail on the head with this. I used to be one of those people who judged a show’s success based on its ratings and I’m so glad my perception on that has changed because there are so many shows that didn’t get nearly as high ratings as I’d hoped, but I still consider them masterpieces. And My Mister is a GREAT example; it averaged at around 4% but is so loved by so many & even went on to win Best Drama at Baeksang so..
I hope people realize the show is not romanticizing or excusing MY's behavior at all. It's simply showing that MY acts that way she does because of her illness, that her behavior is the product of her disorder. I do not see where the show is trying to condone or say that her behavior is okay in any way.
If anything, the fans are the ones who are romanticizing MY's character. She's more than a "strong" and "badass" female lead; her behavior shouldn't get any praise because it's very reckless and can be very dangerous. She's sick, she needs help, and hopefully, we will get to see her healing process along with what caused her to be the way she is.
I'm seriously so impressed at the direction that this show is steering towards. Episode 3 was the perfect mix of amazingly comical without being insensitive, straightforward, but also tackling with the mental health aspect where and when it needed to.
Good start, but I have an ominous feeling that the story is going to go downhill after episode 8. The romance…
I’d like to disagree because it seems like they’ll also address the healing of the characters, through each other & while facing their pasts. And I think another focal point is gonna be the mystery behind the murder of the Moon brother’s mother & how it possibly ties in with Moon Young’s past/family.
I think the drama has the potential to become one of the best kdramas ever, but do not be surprised if the ratings…
I'm actually very surprised the ratings dropped by so much on the second ep as this drama (& it's related topics) seemed to be trending everywhere on naver after the first ep dropped. I'm really hoping that the ratings will eventually pick back up as it usually takes a drama 2-3 weeks to stabilize in rating trends.
However, even if it's not well-received in SK (I honestly can't understand knetz at all no matter how hard I try), if the show continues with this kind of momentum, then it's going to be an international hit for sure. I've already seen so many international fans posting & buzzing about this drama so it's only job is to keep up the great work haha. And again, there are many classics in kdramaland (Weightlifting fairy, Scarlet Heart, etc.) that didn't hit the mark with SK ratings but still became international sensations.
I can understand those that say this show is similar to HDL but I personally don't see & feel it (coming from a HDL fanatic). Yes, both shows have a dark feeling, great fits, & bold female leads which can give it similar vibes, but the entire premise of this show is so different. HDL was definitely fantasy whereas although this one has a fairytale-like feel, it tackles with some very serious & real human struggles. I just hope more people give it a try without trying to compare the two so much because they are honestly so different!
