What could have been...
So this is one of those shows that could have been really great but missed the mark. Lead female is not my favorite, she seems to pigeon hole herself into these dramas where her character is ditzy, over the top, and stupid. In this one she is supposedly innocent and naive but she was just not likable. In my opinion she never really cared for the emperor in any way shape or form. I honestly did not care what happened to her at the end. The male leads portrayal of the emperor was ok. His character was a bit pathetic. He said he loved her and made so many excuses for her but posession comes to mind rather than love. In my opinion there were also too many side characters who really served no purpose. The whole plot and all relationships were built on lies and reveng so you know where that is headed. There are many reveng driven dramas in c-drama land but the characters tend to have one or two redeeming qualities that make you root for them. Many people commented that the male and female leads had great chemistry but not in my opinion. There are far better historical fiction cdramas out there.Was this review helpful to you?
What a waste of beautiful cinematography
I started watching this show on Prime video and the first few episodes really pulled me in. The cinematography was beautiful and the art aspect was really appealing to me. I lost my interest at around episode 9 and the remainder of the show was pretty boring and slow for me. I could find no empathy for Saimdang, I found her character to be arrogant, selfish, and stubborn. Non of which are good character traits. She was not likable in any way shape or form. She was supposedly strong and good but I found her weak minded and her children were bascially neglected. The only person she seemed to care about was her useless husband. Why? Lee Young Ae to me was not attractive and very boring an actress. While I understand she was the darling of Korea I could find nothing really fabulous about her. I did not even like her in Jewel in the Palace. Song Seung Hoon I do love but did not really like this character much either. We have all been down and had relationships not work, pull yourself together man. She was not worth it. The evil female was stereotypical. I wont even waste my time on the present characters. Not one was worth my time and her present character was a door mat.Was this review helpful to you?
Very Tedious
I started out really enjoying this drama thru the first 10-12 episodes and then it descended as many have already said into a tedious and boring and convuluted mess. I could not really like any of the main leads and found them all ridiculous in the end. I really disliked the female lead by episode 18 and her actions were so ridiculous and selfish at the end that I was not really routing for her. The male lead was dull and boring and his utter blind devotion to her was not really believable. Her brother even less so. While I appreciate Leo Wu as an actor his character was not a good one.. I noticed so many people seemed to like him/sympathize with him and I just do not get it. He was a horrible human being who used her so many times. Save her? He was the cause of most of her problems. If he had gotten rid of his phsyco Mother all would have been fine but I guess there would be no story. The third lead male twin brother was also pretty pathetic but he was the one I liked the most. While he was not so believable I guess I understood where he was coming from. Last but not least was the last few episodes and the utterly absurd ending. What a mess. All in all I would not waste my time on 58 episodes of constant lying, constant poisoning and utter nonsense.Was this review helpful to you?
Leave it out in the cold
Terrible show on every level. Cookie cutter everything, all the wrong messages. I am not such a huge fan of the genre but some have been amazing and this is not one of them. I was sick of the lead female and for those who say it is not the actors fault it was. She can not act. Male lead am getting tired of. He has done some great work but am not sure why he is lowering himself to do such nonsense. I get that maybe his company is forcing him and he has no say in what they choose for him. That is and would be a shame if that is the case. Do yourself a favor and leave this one out in the cold.Was this review helpful to you?
