I finally finished this drama and can finally share my final thoughts. I did enjoy it very much, the whole drama showcased beautiful storytelling from the start to the end, from the props to the characters. It felt very much like a chronicle unlike other dramas that had a visible antagonist and protagonist. The poetry in this drama is exquisite, a pity that translations do not do it justice.
That being said, i still think that this drama is not for everyone, I know the pacing and political debates can be slow and dry for some, and the lack of "drama" can also make the viewer get bored easily. It has also been criticized as being historically inaccurate in some areas. Meanwhile, i will be rewatching for sure.
Finally finished -- no spoilers will be shared. This drama was such a major challenge in the beginning (so many…
I am so happy to see someone enjoying this drama as much as I am, i sometimes feel that this gem is a little unappreciated. Like you, i intend to rewatch this drama because i probably missed out some details on my first watch.
"she was always taught that women should take care of the household and had no need for a good education." - but…
You are absolutely right, but at the same time i feel that her ambitions and capabilities were somewhat restricted because of the time period she was born in and the "role" that she had to play in society at that time. I guess overall i do have a lot of empathy for the empress.
I am actually enjoying the drama so far (currently at ep 38 or so), it feels very slice of life so if you are looking for romance or heavy drama this may not be for you. Personally, i am a big fan of the historical/political troupe so this is right up my alley, the political debates are extremely intriguing to me, however i will also admit that they are at times a little hard to follow, i had to do a bit of reading on my own in order to get a better understanding. I also find the characters somehow quite realistic, in the sense that they all have their own flaws and nobody feels too "perfect".
On a side note, the empress reminds me of my own grandmother. I always thought it was a shame she was not born in my generation as she was always taught that women should take care of the household and had no need for a good education.
