I'm going to be brutally honest this is like mxtx for the straights, and I mean it as earnestly as possible. It has everything I like, the pining and yearning across multiple lifetimes, heavy dramatic angst, epic fight scenes and epic final boss, devil's child, demoness teacher who turns out to be the most innocent and purehearted person, found family, multiple story arcs that eventually connects and forms a perfect circle, and redemption arcs for everyone.
A good story will not be enough without a good execution, and Julia Xiang and Deng Wei did it flawlessly. I love love love love the way Julia plays her character! She clearly draws a line that separates Mu Qingge and Xue Ranran, and you can see on screen that both of them are different characters, despite being played by the same person. The microexpressions, mannerisms, body language, the aura in which she carries herself, the tone and the timbre of her voice, you can see where she becomes Mu Qingge, where she becomes Xue Ranran, and where she slowly morphs into a combination of the both of them. It's like watching an art performance coming to life. Also she's like super pretty! If you're into Kdramas, her Mu Qingge reminds me of Queen Seondeok's Mishil, and I love it even more then.
I'm not exactly into male actors but Deng Wei is really good at yearning on screen, and he's really pretty too. His chemistry with Mu Qingge is really entertaining to watch, like watching her tame a rabid dog into an obsessive, clingy puppy (in a good way). He's good at romantic scenes too, and I'm relieved that they did not do the kiss scenes like a dead-fish shot...
The supporting characters are all so powerful, I feel like without them the story won't be quite as alive as it is. Every arcs are done so well, all the chemistries are pleasing to the eye to see, and I see quite a lot of familiar faces, too.
Also I love how tropey they are yet they didn't feed into the tropey boxes, and it didn't have any nonsense, no-brainer acrs whatsoever, and I feel like they didn't have filler scenes? Like everything is crucial and important to the story, and the pacing is really well-done, too.
The sets are magnificent, the colors palettes paints the scenes just how I like it, the camera takes and how the scenes pans out are really beautiful. I love how the CGI didn't look weird or anything, and I love how homey their sect feels (there are lots of sect scenes too, love it!), I like watching their studying arcs, watching them doing mundane tasks like cooking, training, doing side quests, those kind of scenes have a soft spot in my heart.
That being said, I haven't been this hooked to a drama since last year? And this one is definitely worth to watch.
If you're a newbie to Chinese drama, or a seasoned watchers, I think you'll going to like it.
