Is there a lot of aesthetic gore in this show, or is it done poorly or only for shock value? I like well-done gore, but when it's bad and there's a lot of bad gore it just breaks immersion.
it's cause you're trying to justify it instead of enjoying human suffering, and how they bring it on themselves given the means. The show is tailored for the people who experience shadenfreude, and approaches the human condition from a cynical and misanthropic pov. That's one source of hype.
The other source of hype is the sheer plot and cinematographic Creativity utilized in this series. Every episode had a different director and shows a different approach to cinematography.
Some really memorable scenes involve the dancing Nanno as chat messages are pasted over her, Nanno tempting students with biblical vitrage in the background, or the ending shot(pun intended) of ep10 as the event of interest happens in the blurred background.
The way people are "punished" by their weaknesses, dreams, ambitions, and temptations is also often unexpected, but creatively chaotic and over the top, thus entertaining.
