Review When the Phone Rings Spoiler
1. The ML loves her but marries her solely to free her from her toxic home. He doesn't want to talk to her as…
Hi! I appreciate your answer to my review.

I wrote it after being disappointed by the new episodes. I work with disabled clients daily and understanding these different conditions is an important part of my job. This is the background I based my review on.

1 This is a good point.

2 The viewer knows that the FL does not actually have selective mutism. I was talking about the behaviour of the characters, which do not know this yet.

3 I think my problem here was how a drama that uses a condition in such a big way does not do any work to undo the possible misunderstandings a viewer might have. I think this world needs more allyship for disablity rights and this could have been a great platform to do something good.

People with selective mutism can definetly vocalize and speak at times. We need more realistic representation of this in the media.

4 I was not aware of this. I might have missed something while watching. My impression of the situation was that the ML saw the video of her speaking but did not know that she was forced to act mute.

And again my problem here is the way media affects people. It is very easy to make it seem like a life with disability equals a bad life. Life with a disability is normal.

5 I'm not against her talking but I'm afraid of how this all might seem to other viewers. I understand your point here.

6 They most definetly are used to make him seem off putting and it's not something new. I recommend Jessica Gibson's article "Why a disfigured or disabled screen villain is an idea that needs to die" if anyone wants to read more on it.
