For me personally it was because i have rarely seen such a healthy and realistic relationship based on clear communication depicted in a cdrama. Its just like a breath of fresh air and enough follow up of the relationship after they get together and develop through adulthood. Many scenes are mirrors of what i experienced with my boyfriend turned husband turned current father of my children.
Of course we watch dramas for "drama" and not for it to mirror real life...but somehow this show was just inexplicably addictive due to how much it mirrored real life

Edit: also the people are realistic and normal! Noone is a genius who gets top grades without studying or without weaknesses. Families are normal ...not super wealthy nor super poor.
