On Through the Darkness Jan 25, 2025
With a solid construction and steady pace, the drama showed a commitment to narrative excellence, delivering a well-crafted story free of excesses. In the final episodes, there was a risk of rushing events, but surprisingly the plot managed to accurately condense the resolution of the last serial killer arc, concluding the storyline in a satisfying and coherent manner.

I was wrong about the area code, thank you for the correction. But I stand by my analysis.

It’s hard to take this episode seriously—though, honestly, maybe we’re not supposed to. It’s a glorious spectacle of over-the-top absurdity that somehow manages to entertain despite (or because of) its sheer ridiculousness. At some point, the protagonists turn into knockoff versions of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones, barreling through a series of events that defy not only logic but also any reasonable expectation of coherence. And the “big secret” revealed by the psychopathic villain? It’s something we already knew! All that buildup, only for the reveal to boil down to a guilt complex that led him to abandon his wife. After everything they went through? Laughable. Truly laughable.

Then there’s the fictional country of ARGAN, seemingly invented for the sole purpose of being a narrative dumping ground. I couldn’t help but imagine Moroccans shaking their heads in disbelief as their international dialing code is repurposed into a random, multi-ethnic, English-speaking nation. And the cherry on top? The protagonist, in one of the most unintentionally hilarious moments of the episode, just sets the hostages free with a casual “figure it out,” while he heads off to cry and, naturally, hook up in a shack in the middle of nowhere. It’s pure soap opera, but the kind you can’t stop watching because it’s just so… out there.

The final episode doubles down on its melodramatic, cheesy tone, turning even the talented lead actors—whom we know are capable of much better—into caricatures of themselves. It’s entertaining, sure, especially as a way to kick off the new year, but not much more than that. And let’s not forget the complete disregard for the laws of physics, which I’m sure had Einstein rolling in his grave. Ridiculous? Yes. Fun? Absolutely. But make no mistake: this was a glorious trainwreck from start to finish.

The film starts from such a clichéd premise that it almost provokes a sigh of "here we go again". However, against all odds, it turns into something greater thanks to the exquisite execution. The drama's construction is solid, with a careful direction that knows how to keep the audience engaged. There are no elaborate narrative tricks, but there is a consistent balance between emotion and rhythm. The post-credits scene, almost poetic, closes the arc with a simple yet effective message: believing in oneself and valuing the bonds that sustain us is worthwhile.

The protagonist, it is true, starts as an annoyingly naive, almost foolish character. But this narrative choice is justifiable: without this journey of maturation, the final impact would be hollow. Her transformation, although predictable, is genuine and delivers the right dose of redemption without resorting to cheap sentimentalism.

In the end, it is one of those rare cases where the cliché works. Not for innovation, but for the honesty with which the story is told. It is the kind of film that could easily be forgotten, but the sensitivity of the direction and the charm of the details elevate it to something memorable.

I found this extra quite disconnected and superficial, it was just more "fan service". I prefer to stick with the image of the sublime and delicate ending of episode 40. I don't know, but from Duke Su's lines at the end of this extra episode, I felt a spark of a possible second season.

Title The Double
I'm in episode 23 and this is clearly a big telenovela, full of absurdities and we have to have a strong suspension…
Chinese drama without absurdity and nonsense is not Chinese drama 🤪🤪.

Exactly, I didn't like his acting here nor the character. Even the anime did it well
The feeling is that I wasted precious time in my life.
