I agree that the CGI on Allen plus the muscle suit might be a little overdone to some but that tail of his is a thing of beauty. The opening is slightly comedic and not what I expected having read the novel but I wonder if it’s just to set us up for how dark it’s going to be. It might be meant as a joke but it does not always come across as one. Yes per the novel his powers are halved once his tail is split. He was still able to swim to the bottom of the Frozen Sea so maybe it just means he can no longer go home to the sea.

But the novel does reference he just wanted to keep her safe and alive and that’s why he trapped her in that house. They do have a happy ending, thankfully, in part 2. He doesn’t find out the truth about what happened until he gets captured by Princess Shunde. You’re right that her brother used her devil’s core to revive her too.

I thought that too but then Luo Luo said that based on the books, merfolk were from the land anyway so they had legs. And there is a big part in episode 4 when they try to talk him into going on to lane (split his tail) and he says his dad always said it was a taboo, that their power would be reduced and he could never go back to the sea again .
