Title Dear Hyeri
I don't even know where to start??? If i weren't so close to the end I would hage dropped this instead of fast forwarding through the majority of the last two episodes. The tonal shift was so jarring ?? Also someone must have a vendetta against 2nd male lead because to play his genuine heartbreak as comedy and THEN ruin whats supposed to be closure by "cute jealous boyfriend" moment is so cruel. Terrible writing. Useless side characters and side plots where you could have used that time to explore other things. ALSO that bit at the end of ep 11 was so pointless? ? Them just being normal again? The fact that they were together for 8 years and just now learning about each others trauma? It isn't lost on me that the two times he kissed her, she was at rock bottom and we're supposed to think thats romantic...I could go on and on.

also, like so many people are like "you just don't get it. maybe it's too deep." nah that aint it. the writing fell off the deep end. its not because i dont like the choices (which i don't) its because they dont make any sense. lazy, rushed, sloppy writing. again, no amount of romantic music and pretty lighting is gonna make me think its a good idea that shes back with her ex immediately post breakdown lmao
i truly dont mind a toxic relationship in a series but i hate when the toxic relationship is sold to me as a healthy one.

i was so stoked for this drama in the first half but then the writing started to lose me. what happened to her DID suddenly? why does everyone at the job hate her so much lmao ??? why is her ex so shitty to her but claim that he never wanted to break up with her? that random plotline about the possible marriage was so wack too.
i find the directing choices fantastic, etc. etc., but my main gripe is this drama has major 2nd lead syndrome. i think the 2nd lead is not only a better character but a better actor too. the male lead grinds my gears so bad and even the scene where he's sobbing on the floor, i felt nothing. i truly hope eunho ends up with no one. no amount of swelling romantic ballads can make me believe he's this Great Guy.

Title Love in the Big City Spoiler
Not to be that person but... sigh. ((Please don't read this if you are planning on reading the book OR if you…
I had the same thoughts but after a few episodes I just had to take it for what it was. The fact that the author of the novel wrote the screenplay definitely helped because I felt like he mostly kept the spirit of the book. I did find it interesting that he added his friends in more scenes. I enjoyed them though, and I thought maybe without them the show would have been much darker. I'd say I loved this ending but definitely preferred the more open, sadder book ending.

beautiful. breathtaking. so well casted, well written, and well acted. the main character (who is nameless in the book btw) and gyuho are exactly as i imagined them. i loved that the writer changed certain things and added things to make the story even richer. I'd still say the book hit harder for me than the show but those last four episodes were perfect to a T, no notes. I personally loved the ending. really the best BL I've ever seen (which i guess isnt saying much, because i usually drop them after an episode lol).

personally i loved the book ending. i know with so much sadness, he deserves a happy ending but ya know, maybe it was meant to be that way hahs
On Love in the Big City Oct 18, 2024
okay okay okay so i watched the previews and it seems they've added a few things that weren't explicitly in the book. its really interesting and brings to life even more what I've already visualized.

in short, (since it seems this is what people are most concerned about hahaha): the main character and his most stable boyfriend break up and seemingly never get back together. BUT the story is so beautiful! ! ! there's so much good about it, that i still think it'll be worth it.

in terms of neat, happy k drama endings, no it does not. the book has four parts and based on the cast information, I'm pretty sure the show will explore all parts. so my guess is that we'll get the same open, somewhat sad ending.
if they changed it for the show I'd be surprised.

but dont let that deter you! i still think it'll be beautiful and worth watching.

just finished reading the book this was based on and it was so beautiful, funny, and sad all in one. so glad that the author of the book also wrote the screenplay. get ready to cry, everyone.

finished this and honestly I don't usually enjoy romcoms in this style but I was interested in the way it was written. ngl my main issue other than some choppy writing was the ml was kinda the worst actor out of the bunch. he was lowkey giving nothing at all lol

I've just finished episode 5, and so far, it's boring. Does it get better, or is it like this for the whole drama?…
there are great moments and little slivers of promise but overall, they are few and far between in my opinion. if you don't already connect with the story, I'm not sure you'll feel differently watching more.
On The Midnight Romance in Hagwon Jul 1, 2024
my quick review is that this drama had too many missed opportunities because of the poor pacing and messy execution of the story. The ending felt rushed and again, so much poor pacing in the last few episodes. I don't mind slow dramas and I love mature dramas but this ultimately missed the mark, despite all the things I did like about it (the direction, most of the acting, the themes).
On The Midnight Romance in Hagwon Jun 23, 2024
logically and culturally I can see why everyone is plotting against her and spreading rumors but man is it exhausting to watch lmao especially in the two male team leaders' case- like they literally came out of nowhere. not literally, but the way the reasons for their grievances were explained so hastily and now we're suddenly two episodes from the end? wild. the one-sided crush thing is so lazy, but whatever. I think it would have made me feel differently if it were introduced earlier. I will say though, these last two episodes were much better than last weeks. The love confession scene was /meh/ in regards to making me feel anything but I'm glad they're deciding to face everything head on and the last moments of episode 14 redeemed it for me.

overall, watching this just makes me want to watch one spring night again.

ANYWAY. Ms. Nam is the only one I really respect right now lol

people will say it's lack of patience but we're 12 episodes in. if they're still watching and still not enjoying…
I never said the dialogue was too complex. I said some scenes went on way too long. I stand by my comment, and the rest of the comment too, which mentioned things I liked about the latest episodes. I understand the dialogue perfectly, but as I said, pacing issues. I love complex dialogue, it just has to engage me.

And to be quite honest, I'm not the biggest fan of super lighthearted romantic comedies most of the tome. I never said I was looking for a Hallmark production and if I were, I wouldn't have even started watching this drama. Regarding your suggestions (that I didn't ask for, by the way), I've dropped three out four of those because I wasn't a fan. Also, I'm familiar with the concept of Korean hagwons. Thanks though, have a good one.

you know what's wild is that I would be able to suspend disbelief about all of this if the main conflicts in the story were more interesting to me/if the script were slightly stronger lol

I like the drama (for the most part), and I like the leads and their flaws but execution is messy in so many parts. "student becomes the teacher" and "young cocky dude meets perfectionist, rigid woman" are really common tropes that I don't mind but again, script issues lmao

I don't see many people repeatedly posting that they don't like it. not here, anyway. I've seen people post that they've dropped it after a few episodes though, which is valid. I've also seen people say they're still trying to get into it but are unsure and that's valid too. I think it's fine if people are bored by the concept. I also think it's fair considering there have been so many good moments in the show that people are sticking around even if they don't have the most positive opinion about everything else.

to me, the script isn't bad but I have my issues with it. in my opinion, the story IS slow moving like many people have pointed out and no, not everyone has (or even WANTS to have) the patience for it but there are actual pacing issues too. that's all subjective though.

personally I think it's unfair to imply that anyone who doesn't appreciate or connect with the themes is immature. but, maybe that's just me!

Can someone explain to me WHY so many people aren't liking this drama? Why is this rated so low? It's so good!
people will say it's lack of patience but we're 12 episodes in. if they're still watching and still not enjoying it, maybe it's simply not everyone cup of tea. right now I'm in the "there's a lot to like about it, but enough to dislike that it distracts me from the good" camp.
