REVIEW:
The beauty of this series is culmination of all the big & little things that was so crafted well
The engaging story, the multifaceted characters, gorgeous cinematography complimented with a beautiful soundtrack makes feel immersed in their world. It felt like a love letter from women (female director, writer & lead by women) to all the women of that time who faced so many hardships and inspite of that, they dared to dream and survive. Every character, even the antagonists weren't simply black & white, some were the victims of that time who were radicalised due to abuse and for their survival and you feel for them , the story also dont shy away from topics of how the absolute & unchecked power of emperor were so dangerous & that with greater success, power, or status leads to more severe and painful consequences when things go wrong. Although its an ensemble drama but the main central character & protagonist of the story is Lan Xiang who is played by Tan Song Yun & she is impeccable in her role, her subtle acting is so good that even with her eyes she can potray so much emotions that you will be fixated. The character of Lan Xiang is very well written & fleshed out, she is optimistic, intelligent & resourceful but not invulnerable, like humans, she makes mistakes but learns from them and makes her enemies fall in their own traps when they underestimate her due to her status of being a slave which are some of the satisfying moments of the show for the audience. The chemistry between the leads is subtle, slowly built up with character growth from both of them & doesnt feel forced & chemistry with other characters are also well, doesnt follow the traditional evil mother in law or sibling formulae which felt fresh.
But like everything else in the world, nothing is perfect, its cons include times jumps which are jarring and hard to keep track of & if you dont know chinese , I feels like there are some deep references and idioms which are lost in translation.
If you managed to read till the end, I again reiterate it is a masterpiece and one of the best chinese dramas ever. My favorite chinese drama is the story of Ming Lan, this has probably become my 2nd favourite drama.
