Idk how it is in other countries, but where I'm from, being in the same class as your friends is something quite important, especially in those days where we had to pay a lot for phone bills. There weren't any free times since we had to study a lot and the class room was the only place where we could build some kind of relationship. So it makes sense why him leaving the class was dramatic, I certainly went through that during my school days :]
