All of your complains are features of the genre and it's okay if that's not for you. It was very much a fanfiction-y…
Yes, that’s very true! Hopefully more people will save themselves 12 hours of their lives if I put it in the review section. 😭

I like the makjang genre, such as Penthouse, Marry my Husband and maybe even Perfect Marriage revenge to an extent. In my opinion, those were really good dramas even though I know many people disliked Penthouse because of the over the top nature of some characters and the plot. So I don’t think it was the genre. From what I’ve seen, it seemed like bad writing. Of course, this is my opinion and I don’t see the point in going back and forth explaining myself, but I like writing reviews based on my POV. :))

On When the Phone Rings Jan 9, 2025
I want to preface that I only watched 8/12 episodes. I couldn’t get through the rest. I wanted to watch this drama because the ratings were very high, at almost 9/10. After watching a few dramas recommended from MDL that were consistently rated highly but never reached my expectations, I learnt to never trust MDL or any review websites. I now have more than 5 dramas that I’ve dropped just based on high ratings on this website. People will give a high rating very easily and this is clear from the high ratings for When the Phone Rings. Honestly, as someone who was very excited to watch this drama and watched it from its release because it was marketed as a thriller and mystery, I disliked it. A lot. Every episode made me laugh. The woman is supposedly mute because of an accident and her husband is portrayed as a mean careless prick in the beginning of the drama who couldn’t even be bothered to do the bare minimum of learning sign language to communicate with his wife. Then a few episodes later, he somehow switches into a secretly jealous and very sweet person who would put his life on the line for the woman. But when did this switch happen, it was never made clear. The plot is also so silly. I was only interested when the secret caller was a secret. When we found out it was his wife, it was getting so boring. I don’t even know what was happening half the time. Just so much talking on the phone with the secret caller who he should have know was the wife if he has at least 2 brain cells. The wife and the husband were such cringey characters which is a shame because I know at least the ML is a good actor in Hospital Playlist and A Bloody Lucky Day. The FL was so annoying. All she did was pout in a silly way and make threats on the phone. Overall, this drama had potential with the overall premise but the way it was done was horrendous. If you’re reading this, give this a skip! Also, I’ve seen some things going around about how the show tried to insert references to the Gaza genocide, which I find so silly. I wouldn’t get into the specifics of that but that also made me give a bombastic side eye. Overall it’s a 4.5/10!
