I agree with you on this! him assuming those letters were from Bai Shuo was the biggest ick for me, it speaks about his feelings how is still expecting something from her. This part would have been better if he didn't have to mistake the letters in first place. It's giving "I haven't move on" feels and like you said the build up kinda fell for me there. They could have stayed with the "I don't like you to I realize I like you" trope without needing that destined lovers narrative.
