The historical rom-com that actually saved me from drama boredom.
I’ve tried so many sweet dramas lately (both modern and costume), and Youthful Glory completely stood out for pure entertainment value. The pacing was amazing and I never got bored once. Best of all? It didn't ragebait me with a cold, distant male lead. He was visibly, undeniably in love from early on AND I LOVED THAT. The story is simple, the romance and humor never feel like they're trying too hard, and their daily moments together literally had me smiling, squealing, and constantly wanting more.
The cast was just perfectly picked. Song Wei-long as the ML was PERFECTION. gorgeous, respectable, and switching seamlessly between his fierce, tough-guy personality and his playful, teasing self around his friends and the FL. He’s smart, loyal, deeply protective, and honorable (and Song Wei-long is just insanely attractive, need I say more?). The FL was so cute and assertive, which made total sense considering she grew up managing her estate on her own. Their chemistry and the whole squad's energetic bromance and sismance were just adorable.
And can we talk about the two side couples? I was literally rooting for them so hard:
• Zhang Huai Yu & Bai Min Min: Their enemies-to-lovers arc was an absolute riot. The bickering slowly melting into affection had me obsessed with their chemistry ugh!
• Shu Jing Ran & Yun Yi: Pure love-at-first-sight. Watching them face societal scorn over differing statuses until Jing Ran took fate into his own hands was just so cute man.
Even without a huge budget, production did such a good job. Wardrobe, hair, makeup, settings, and camera work were all done with care, you could tell the team actually wanted to deliver a fun drama to enjoy.
If I had to point out anything I didn't like, it was only two things:
1. The fight scenes: The ML and the stunt crew deserve credit because he did a lot of it himself, but it felt a bit too superhero/Superman-like at times. I would've loved it way more if the martial arts felt realistic and grounded.
2. The Wen Zong subplot: Nanlu’s attack, his suicide, and the FL’s reaction felt unnecessary and didn't add much. It just distracted from the main story, and the drama would’ve been stronger if it skipped those side arcs that went nowhere.
At the end of the day, between the green-flag main romance, top-tier side couples, hilarious squad dynamics, and constant good vibes, this was easily one of the most entertaining and charming costume dramas I’ve watched in a long time!
