K-Drama Realism wasn't invited, but Seo Kang-joon sure was (you wont regret watching it tho)
Overall, "Undercover High School" is a super fun, fast-paced action-comedy that had me laughing, kept me curious, and had me fighting for my life not to binge-watch the entire show in a single day (cuz of seo kang joon ;3) It delivers great entertainment value, but to really talk about this drama, we have to address the elephant in the room: the plot.
Now, as for the storyline... well, let’s just say realism was strictly NOT on the guest list for this party.
It honestly felt like the writers threw every single K-drama cliché into a blender without a lid: a high-stakes NIS undercover operation, high school bullying, a secret hidden treasure (??), a childhood connection, and a villain so cartoonishly obsessed they belonged in a Saturday morning lineup. There were moments where the mystery was genuinely cooking, but just as many moments where you had to take a deep breath, roll your eyes, and just accept the fever-dream nonsense unfolding on screen.
The drama had all the potential in the world, and with such a heavy-hitting cast, the script really should have given us a plot that could stand on its own two feet. Instead, it relied entirely on character interactions to pull all the weight. The story desperately needed some basic logic and way more room to breathe, especially for powerhouse actresses like Jin Ki-joo (Oh Su-a) and Kim Shin-rok (Seo Myeong-ju). You could tell from a mile away that their characters had rich, complex layers, but the writing barely scratched the surface before moving on to the next chaotic set piece.
If it weren't for the cast’s magnetic pull, would this show have held up? Honestly, not a chance in hell—because the undisputed MVP keeping this entire ship afloat was Seo Kang-joon.
He completely steals the show as Jeong Hae-seong, bringing so much sharp comedy, effortless charm, and genuine emotional depth to a role that could have easily been a generic "cool agent" cardboard cutout. And let’s be completely real for a second. HE LOOKS SO DAMN GOOD. Those insanely pretty eyes and model visuals aside, his performance was a flawless 10/10. Every deadpan double-take, ridiculous high school interaction, and jaw-dropping stunt was an absolute treat to watch.
At the end of the day, if you take the plot with a massive grain of salt, turn off your brain, and come in purely for high-stakes action, hilarious squad dynamics, and elite lead charisma, it’s a total crowd-pleaser. 8/10!
