News Rewatched the second it ended: why Study Group is an absolute masterpiece
Study Group is an absolute 10/10 masterpiece, and I owe my entire K-drama obsession to this exact show! I initially started watching it with Sia (my amazing friend) who was already a huge fan of the webtoon and had finished the drama. She suggested we watch it together, and honestly, that was the best decision ever. I fell so deeply in love with this show that the second I finished the finale, I immediately rewatched the entire thing from the start. I’ll forever be grateful to Sia for introducing me to this absolute treasure!
The story has everything: suspense, adventure, top-tier comedy, and heart-pumping action. Can we talk about Yoon Ga-min (Hwang Min-hyun)? What an endlessly fascinating main lead! It is genuinely mind-boggling how he manages to be an absolute failure at academics despite being the most committed, hardworking student in the room. But honestly? It’s commendable. Even though he possesses world-class, terrifying martial arts skills, he stubbornly insists on pursuing his true dream: just getting decent grades.
He looks like a total nerd on the outside, but irony hits like a truck because he is anything but weak. Bad guys constantly make the mistake of underestimating him, only to immediately find out what happens when you mess with him or his people! Plus, finding out his mom is an awesome martial artist too? An apple doesn't fall far from the tree now I’m deeply curious about his uncle!
What makes Ga-min such a GOAT is that while he’s just trying to study, he unintentionally ends up dismantling the entire corrupt ecosystem of Yeonbaek Technical High School. Watching Ga-min, his teacher Lee Han-kyung, and the rest of the study group teach all the villains the lessons they deserve in hilarious, creative ways was so satisfying.
The character development and squad dynamic were smooth, subtle, and so heartwarming:
• The Study Group Squad: Watching these lost kids transform from isolated individuals into a trusting, fiercely protective family was beautiful. Sun-cheol and his grandfather's story specifically had me so touched! Ga-min doesn't just protect himself; he holds onto anyone falling into the abyss.
• The Fighting & Action Choreography: Hands down the heart and soul of this drama! The fight scenes are innovatively choreographed to absolute perfection—powerful, unique, and hilarious all at once.
• The OSTs: "Back Packer" and "Hood" became immediate favorites. Having rap-based OSTs matched Ga-min’s badass vibe flawlessly and amped up every single fight scene.
Beyond the comedy and beatdowns, the show actually carries a really powerful message. Their motto "I will create opportunities even in hellish situations" gives hope to students who don't have peace or privileges handed to them. It shows that while violence is bad, using your strength to defend the innocent against corrupt authority, killer gangs, and oppressive systems is sometimes vital. PHU believed struggling against a corrupt system was futile; Ga-min proved that people and situations can change when you refuse to give up.
Season 2 needs to drop immediately because I need to see this best school squad take on the world!
