Not too bad, but will not recommend.
I am glad that I completed the drama, but I have really fast-forwarded from Episode 32-38. My top dramas are Nirvana in Fire and The Story of Minglan. I am searching for dramas which might even have 1/4th the charm they had. The Legend of Zhouhua showed some faint promise here and there, but at the end of the day, it was just average for me.
I found the show because the ML was the same in The Story of Minglan. I loved his character in TSoML, and he played it reasonably well, although there were discrepancies in the age of the character and the actor. The same confusion is in TLoZ as well. The age gap is not a big deal breaker, it makes sense as it progresses. But it is still sort of weird. And the acting is slow, the dialogues are lengthy, and it gets boring at times. The FL is okay-okay, but too perfect. Apparently without even a proper background or education in medicine, and simply armed with "reading" about things, she becomes even better than experienced Imperial Physicians. And for some reason everyone trusts her more than their family doctors. She sees through all the plots and understands everything with minimal context. It got tiring very soon. And the sequence of scenes were weird as well. Something happens, it is shown partially, and then explanation is given at some other time.
Somewhere in the 10-20 episodes, the pacing caught up, and it was fun to watch. Before and after, it was exhausting. The plots were not so ingenious, and character motivations were basic and weak.
That said, I liked the villain in the story. She has given a grand performance. The scholar was also admirable. But all in all, it was just bland and mindless, entertaining just enough with pretty costumes and good music.
