I liked QL in the novel. There the romance line is also very very subtle but I think that the drama is making a disservice to her character, taking out scenes/lines and making her a background character or annoying to the viewers.
In the novel she is there being XS love interest (but they don't remind you of this every time they are together) and doing her job as Vermillion. She is Xiao Se's shadow, she is always on his side and like LWJ she has blind trust in him. She knows her job, she wants to protect XS and be more strong than him and kidnap him in the end (parallel to her parents love history).
She is hardworking and all her life she has been training her Spear (maybe because she doesn't want to be in the shadow of her father and wants to make a name for herself in the Jianhu). She is the typical wuxia heroine that has only known martial arts all her life and was not interested in romance or being feminine (the flower scene is to show us this) until she knew the ML.
She is not weak and she was in the same realm as LWJ when they arrived to Tianqi. She is the only woman in the Jade List. She has never traveled in the martial world or outside of Xueyue City. She has been spoiled for everyone all her life and she's the terror of all the disciples of Xueyue City because for her it's more fun training with another person than training alone. For this reason she is the guardian of the 14th floor of the asencion tower. She doesn't know about the power struggles in the imperial city or anything of that matter. @Lotlotlots It was not LWJ, but someone he encountered in his way to Tianqi. One of the bad guys. It was one of my favorite friendships from the novel because it was totally unexpected. Wushuang and Lei Wu Jie keep a friendly relationship of mutual respect and admiration regardless of being on different factions and being disciples of different cities throughout all the novel.Sadly they can't be in the same political faction because Wushuang city will never be in the same side that Xueyue City.
