Maybe the powers that be didn't want an actress as lovely and polished as Chu Ran to play the role. Chu Ran is perfect as an evil princess who's feminine and sultry. The role of Zhu Yan seems to me more childlike and impish with room for growth. Even though both actresses share the same age, more or less, Ren Min seems younger to me which is probs what they were looking for as role of ZY is for a very young woman, imo.
