I'm glad the author is enjoying it. I'm ready for Jeremy to start getting more roles after this show if it does…

I read the novel so I can confirm, the drama follows very closely to the novel. It is 90% similar, with the main…
Thank you for sharing your thoughts from reading the Novel. I agree, and the top comments responding to Shu Ke’s post yesterday felt the drama followed the novel pretty closely (aside form Luo Yinfan). Thank goodness for the change in the drama ML version, cause worse than BZH in JOF would be hard to watch. Although I loved JOF, I had problems with the little to non existent open display of affection between the leads.

No, Chong Zi's character in the drama is completely different from the book, and the author did mention that characterization…
It’s not based on the “cute” comment. In Chapter 3 of the novel, the EXACT word “CHILDISH’’ was used to describe Chong Zi after her response to Luo Yinfan for accepting her as his disciple. The novel literally says in Chapter 3: “Everyone laughs again. Even though it is a bit CHILDISH but it is sincere and beautiful.” It also says in Chapter 3, “Clearly, he was overestimating the abilities of a ten year old.” She is literally written as a ten year old in Chapters 3 and 4 of the novel, who didn’t have parents that raised and guided her, and in Chapter 4 Lou Yinfan says “Why are you so disobedient and undeveloped?”

As a Disciple, isn’t cooking her Master’s pet fish without asking, drawing turtles on other’s backs, her and Zhuo Hao‘s childish banter, etc... portraying “young, naive, and childish”? The drama is following the scenes of the book appropriately, and these are all scenes that are both in the book and the drama that portray childish actions. The author says in her Weibo post yesterday “...Many plots and scenes are reproduced as described in the book as much as possible.”

The drama appears to be following closely with the novel according to both the author and her fans. I think both the director and book author visualize the heroine to be portrayed as young, naive and childish, at least until she changes and transforms her character later. Additionally, it appears the director of the drama has visualized the male protagonist as a softer personality in the drama than in the book. The female lead, Chaoyue acted polar opposite when she was cast in Ever Night S2, as Hao Tian, a very strong, stoic, powerful and heartless character with notably different tone of voice and opposite acting style there. Also, Jeremy’s acting has changed a bit here from when he played a Master/Shifule also in Novoland Castle . Both leads seem to be only following how the director has instructed them to portray the characters. The novel’s author, Shu Ke, in her post yesterday, seemed to be supportive of both actors portrayals. Some of the characters so far are already evolving and the drama’s storyline has continued to get more interesting with each ep, ep 10 was really good.

Weibo discussion re: Chong Zi author, Shu Ke’s comments on the drama.

《重紫》原著作者发文力挺主演:杨超越演的挺可爱的,徐正溪演的没问题

The original author of "Heavy Purple" posted an article supporting the starring roles: Yang Chaoyue's acting is quite cute, and Xu Zhengxi's acting is no problem.”

From Shu Ke’s Weibo:

“...Many plots and scenes are reproduced as described in the book as much as possible. Although the heroine will change, her acting is pretty cute here. The male protagonist (not an actor’s performance issue) is actually not affected by the warmer personality, but the lines and actions are not adjusted according to the apprentice’s personality from a child to a human. If you think about it, the female protagonist should seem to be in her teens, and her life experience is pitiful. So It's normal for the heroine to wipe her mouth and coax...”

On The Journey of Chong Zi Feb 16, 2023
Chong Zi, within only 4 hours of broadcast reached a popularity rating of 23,000 (over 10k is considered great), reached no. 1 on China’s Cat’s Eye drama popularity list on it’s first day, and was able to sell it’s distribution licenses early prior to its broadcast to 7 different countries.

So, if your fave is in this drama, their career is definitely safe and may prosper further.

The acting and production quality are actually pretty good. The editing between scenes, the script, and the direction are not bad, but could use improvement. The drama gets better the further along you go in episodes. It’s better than most of what has been released recently and a relief to finally have something decent to watch right now. Personally, I’m looking forward to Chong Zi turning evil, not because I like evil sides of people, but I think it’s gonna get really interesting and climactic at that time. So, I’m anticipating the progression we’re going to see in her character as she eventually learns sword fighting, spells, and overcomes turmoils later. Looking forward to this ride with ya’ll, have fun!

Did Yang Chaoyue dub herself or someone else?
It appears from the trailers, Chaoyue, Asher Ma, and Deng Wei are using their own voices, Jeremy’s voice is dubbed by another voice actor.

The second trailer is better than the first. It’s been on weibo hot search since it’s release today, 15 M views so far vs. Starry Love is I believe 2-3 M views. So the anticipation in China for Chong zi seems to be good. It looks better than I was expecting based on the 2nd trailer. I’m really hoping the drama delivers Ashes of Love crossed with Journey of the Flower vibes. I’m really looking forward to the emotional journey and interesting storyline depicted in the second trailer.
