I totally agree with this. Not just for this genre, but any genre. An ex of mine used to piss me off to end because…
I think I can see what your ex meant, but he's wrong if he's assuming that the same/unique set of rules can be applied to ALL fantasy fiction from different authors. Writers and artists can only be as free and creative as their own created world allows them to. Put it this way : I can be as creative as I want to be in the process of creating a world and the set of rules that comes with it, but then I will be bound by my own exact rules alongside the characters of the world I created for the tale I want to share. Of course, you could specifically create a world without that much of rules. That works too, something like H2G2 and Alice in Wonderland.
Exactly! And that's why I struggle with how the writer of this show drew such clear connections to Asimov's laws!…
By the way, thank you for your article : I've still not see this show (it's on my plan list ... I think) but I will give it a try. At least thanks to you I won't exactly expected too much ^^
Just an addition about the Isaac Asimov's Laws of Robotic : almost all his novels from the "robot series" tells a way to break these three laws. That's the whole purpose of the novels. To think there's people still discussing these while the author himself purposedly broke these laws in each novel he wrote ... ^^
I will add to the list : - The cheap FX created with MS Paint by a drunken CG assistant (in a bad day). - The convenient "timing", when everything occurs at the worst possible time in the worst possible place. Can't beat this sense of timing to add to a tragedy. But to be fair, I'm quite tolerant about all said things, since it's aiming to add something to the drama. I especially like the "gang-on-demand" : the sum of their intelligence combined is usually still inferior either to the villain or the hero alone, but they will still manage to do something unexpected.
"The weak conscience" group seems the bravest of them all ^^, at least to me. The things they have to endure, really, they're amazing ^^. It seems I'm more of a cheater myself, mixed with the weak conscience "need-to-finish-what-I-start" philosophy. Since I was very close to utterly dropped some dramas (Princess Prosecutor made me struggle from start to the end) quite a few times, I'm wondering if guilt alone can explain why the "weak conscience" fans are persevering even when the show get on their nerves. I think they might also be ... a bit stubborn, and that they could be motivated equally by remorse along with guilt ? Somewhere along these lines : "... but what if I drop it here and it gets better after ?"
Actually I didn't choose the title and you are right, it doesn't completely fit
hmm ? Why not ? It's a perfectly fine title, and your article is great. I just hope you will make a second review like this, since there are still plenty of villains out there ^^
A villain with a justifiable wrath, but with questionable methods : Lee Jin Pyo from City Hunter is a very good example here. Anyway, I think there's still a lot of material for a "Crafting The Perfect Asian Drama Villain 2" ^^
I wonder if The Rescue Twirl Hug should be count as a move. A reflex to protect the person the male lead is with, maybe ? Anyway, I'm always waiting for the suspended moment just after it happened. Time and space freezing for a few seconds, eyes in eyes ... ^^
The mother of the male lead should be burned on the stake, reincarnated as a cow who lost her way from the farmer…
OK, it was 3 years ago but Ivo, this comment of yours made me laught to tears. Thank you. And yes, I wish she would have step on her. But is this the best she can do ?
Haha, aww a bad review for one of my favorite shows. ;_: But it's always so interesting to read conflicting thoughts!…
Despite this ...hum... bashing review ^^, I can still totally understand why people would gladly love this show : there's indeed a sense of uniqueness, an appeal of sort from the absurd (something I crave with some animes, too). But if it was the very purpose, as for your example, being free of doing whatever they want, then I still think it wasn't enough... for a 2016 TV-show. Now to be honest, maybe I'm not totally fair (and maybe I should update my review accordingly) because it's not something that easy to achieve in a tv drama. And very few (as far as I know ?) achieve this craziness (survive style 5 maybe ? but it's a movie). This is where animation can truly shine (Sakigake!! Cromartie Koukou, Sakamoto desu ga?, FLCL ... to name a few). Anyway, thank you for your thoughts. As it happens, I enjoyed your reviews quite a few times already. Always a reference ^^.
Jun Ji Hyun, as an actress, could depict a clumsy girl, then switch to a bordeline psychotic fool, then transform into a crude bitch, to finally end up as a kind smartass and all of that in a matter of minutes and without losing an inch of credibility doing so. That must be a world record somewhere.
Haha lol I personally thought some of them were pretty damn bad x'D But since I still have a long way to go in…
I would suggest one rated under 5 or less. Bad romance is going to have a whole new meaning for us. Or we could try to write an article about really bad dramas, not limited to romance, but I suppose that would take bravery on a whole different level ^^
I can only praise you for your bravery and courage, Jeana, for putting at least both Pinocchio and City Hunter together on that list. Now the thing is I can't totally disagree with you, because I'm pretty sure we sense that as well, but maybe with... different appreciation levels. My only point of concern is I was expecting REALLY bad romances, and i mean ABSOLUTELY bad. That could have been a little more fun ^^.
You can actually tell when this ghost is pissing you off when you want to yell "get a life !" at it. Very good drama, at least a lot better than what I was expected.
