I too really liked that aspect of the show.
The way I see it, there could've been multiple reasons for making couples from the other season(s) participate. Like @Bliss Ace said, it could be to motivate participants to take action. It could also be to attract viewers who previously rooted for these couples, so that the viewers would watch this spinoff. Or just to give the couples a platform to tell their story...

Right?! And of all the times that the king could think of a way to "defeat" the minister, he thinks of this one punishment but actually Minister Yu couldn't have cared less at Eun Su being sentenced to death.
I lowered my rating of the show because of this and the ending where the princess decides "I'm going to pretend to be dead for 3 years" despite knowing how painful it would be for Han Su. Ughh that was infuriating!

But not a single character holds the king responsible for his actions, and everyone just smiling at him while conveniently forgetting this in the end is just ridiculous to me!
