Celebrity One of the best romantic comedies of recent offerings
In a world filled with distractions, this show had me rapt with attention. I tried it out of curiosity; I mean, a drama about a woman (Nam Ji Hyun) raised in a traditional, patriarchal family and a man (Kim Jae Young) who runs a sex toy company isn't to be missed. However, I instantly regretted watching while airing. Hidden beneath the unassuming poster is a wonderful, fiery romance that had me revisiting episodes again and again. But the poster does capture the essence of this drama, the incredible dialogue between the leads that thoughtfully and insightfully touches on differing views and social norms about sex, love and marriage. It also covers the stereotypes and biases surrounding the sex toy industry, whether that'd be of the customers, the employees, the owners, or their family. Honestly, things I personally hadn't even thought about, but appreciated the drama for teaching me and shedding light on the struggles faced by those who may have been overlooked previously. At its core this is a romantic comedy so it doesn't veer too far into the subject; I think it strikes a nice balance.
I really, really like the heroine, Yeon Su. I believe Nam Ji Hyun portrayed her role superbly. Yeon Su could have come across a prude; instead, she is an interesting mix of naivete and confidence. She had me early on as we are introduced to the couple with her comment: "It's just polite to look people in the eye." What an eye opener (pun intended) for a guy who'd been passing through life in a blur, unfocused, devoid of color, day in and day out. She has his attention and they have mine. She may be naive when it comes to physical relationships, however, she isn't a fool. She is secure, decisive, and stands up for herself with finesse. I think many in similar upbringing will find her relatable, the deeply ingrained principles she holds about what it is to be a woman and her attitude towards sex before marriage, shaped by her conservative family. And the journey as told in the drama to help her see beyond that is rewarding to witness.
As for the romance, wow, I think that's where the title comes from. The connection Yeon Su makes with Dal is comical, swoony, wholesome, hot. I was so amused watching them together. I am also very smitten with Kim Jae Young here as Dal. He is so sexy and so expressive. Yeon Su communicates her thoughts clearly, often rendering him speechless. His utterly confused expressions in response to her (misinterpreted) declarations are one of the best faces of the drama. I enjoyed their interactions so much. The conversations are candid and touch on very valid points from both sides. The OST is pleasing as well, perfectly complementing the narrative, whether instrumental or lyrical. That entire sequence where the song Love is Life by Kassy makes its first appearance had me rewatching for days. The episodes are breezy and the side characters are charming, especially Yeon Su's aunt, who is such a hoot.
It's great when you find something that grabs your immediate attention and doesn't let go. There's much joy and meaning in that. One of the best romantic comedies of recent offerings.
