Cutting sagueks from over fifty episodes to less than ten episodes was a mistake. Enough episodes ensured fleshed out characters, deeply felt and memorable plot lines. Nowadays everything is too fast, it’s like people don’t want to enjoy the tension and emotions that you felt with watching old school masterpiece sageuks.
There is no depth because the industry (and the viewers) just want a quick instantly forgettable entertainment, they don’t want to be presented questions or complex topics. They want their entertainment like their food, fast and good enough to eat. Not well nourishing and never to throughly enjoy. As a consequence, directors and writers focus on shock valueI to pretend substance instead of writing something truly interesting and deeply layered. It’s like society as a collective suffers from concentration problems so they seek quick subpar highs to keep them busy enough to prevent critical thinking.
There is nothing mature about sexualising women in media and showing you pornography, this is done because they have nothing else to offer and need viewers to make money. Sexual scenes can be done well and in a way it actually adds something to the plot (the handmaiden), it tells a story and tries to make a point even when it’s provoking disgust and shock (old boy) or even as comedic relief and satirical criticism (the treacherous). In this show the only point it makes is everything else is lacking so here’s some porn to keep you hooked!
