My theory: Pai found Tim's letter and read it. To find out if Tim maybe really loves him he's now conductin a series of tests: 1. opening a letter that looks similar to Tim's to see his reaction 2. telling Tim he doesn't want to get married anymore 3. telling Tim he wants to give up his job and they can do a community project together since Tim is an architect (is that verified by the way since this would be an easy thing to verify?) If Tim chooses to stay despite not getting any monetary reward anymore it would prove he really does love Pai and isn't trying to scam him anymore. Just my thoughts.
