I understand him differently. I dont think hes being a coward. Hes feeling deeply appreciative of his current relationship with Jin that he doesn't want to risk it. This is fear in my view and hes afraid because hes judging himself harshly. He truly doesn't believe he deserves the love he sees in Jin. He lives with guilt and it distorts his world view. A truly sad sad situation.
