A typical ‘the rise of the underdog’ sports movie, yet heartwarming and inspiring.

Rebound is based on the true story of Busan’s Jungang High School basketball team, which against all odds, managed to win the national championship with only six players.

Like other sports movies, Rebound offers nothing new in terms of concept and storylines. This movie is not far from the idea of capturing the essence of the human spirit and maintaining the storyline about overcoming setbacks. Although people can predict how the story is going to be, it’s worth anticipating and worth watching.

The cinematography effectively conveys the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and fighting spirit. One strong point of this movie, in my opinion, is the realistic and convincing portrayal of the players. Each character manages to carry the story efficiently, even though some characters don’t have a prominent backstory. The combination of good character development, well-developed plotlines, and a positive message makes this movie a heartwarming and inspiring piece to watch. It’s an uplifting story of hope, dreams, and resilience.

A slightly flawed remake.

‘The Betrayal’ basically follows the original plot template with a few tweaks, and it manages to give pretty much the same emotional rollercoaster of being betrayed and getting revenge, but the ride isn't crazy enough. I think it’s good that this remake makes them a family of four instead of three. Ploy, the daughter, adds a different feeling to the table. She gives a more vulnerable perspective, that of a little child trying to comprehend the entire betrayal and divorce situation. It hurts to see how it affects her. The good sibling relationship between Patch and Ploy also has a different emotional impact compared to other characters.

In this version, I think Jane displays more softness and poise. Her strong instinct helps her steer the emotional and dramatic plot better. Athin is meant to be hated throughout the series. Kate is unlikeable to begin with. Among the supporting characters, I don’t like Tul. I know he means well, but he seems unnaturally nice.

The first half of this series is good, but the second half is downhill. All episodes are over an hour long, and some scenes are unnecessary, making it slowly lose its grip. However, the finale has better characters’ resolution. Overall, it’s a slightly flawed remake. It didn’t exceed my expectations, but it’s still a good watch.

If you have ever watched the original or other version, you can expect how things are going to unfold. So, don’t expect too much. But if you haven’t seen any, you can give this drama a try, and who knows, you might love this version.

A group of women outsmarting corrupt men.

Smugglers is like Ocean’s 8 minus the grand heist. This female-powered action adventure is not really about smugglers but more about how ordinary people found ways to make and share the profit from the illegal activities. It also realistically shows a number of smuggling-related aspects, such as repackaging and corrupt customs officials.

The film is not without flaws, but good character development brings so much more to the table. Kim Hye Soo never disappoints, no matter what character she plays, and pairing up with Yum Jung-ah elevated this movie into something more than simply an action drama. It draws stronger feelings of sisterhood and emotion. Zo In-sung gives his best as a corrupt police officer that you love to hate. In my opinion, the star of this movie is Go Min-Si. Despite being a supporting role, her character really stood out in helping carry the story.

The plots are not very complicated. With one or two twists that are constructed around allegiances and betrayal, they manage to make the audience gasp and anticipate more. The story develops well, with a good balance between comedy, drama, and action. I like that the comedy was well placed and not overdone, and the switch in tone doesn’t make the story look too weird. Kudos to the props team for recreating the unique 70s vibe. The attention to detail never failed to impress me.

All in all, it’s an entertaining movie, and it's always nice to see women outsmarting corrupt men.

It's more than homelessness

Tackling the social issue of homelessness and drifters, this movie carries out the concept efficiently and brilliantly without pointing fingers at the welfare system or society for the issue that arises. It also deals with a broader theme of humanity, inequality, and morality, subtly touching on issues such as child safety, pregnancy care, health, and mental issues. This is one of the movies where social issues are shown and handled without bias.

The movie doesn’t solely focus on homelessness; it shows the process of two families with different wounds meeting and becoming one, somehow finding happiness in their intertwined fates. The storylines and conflict are well developed, although there are some indistinct plots. But it doesn’t affect the story as a whole. The well-paced story development gives the movie a good balance. I love how this movie does not simply use a homeless family as a dramatic setup but instead tells a story of growth and improvement around it.

In terms of acting, each actor carried their respective characters successfully. Jung Il-woo nailed the character. Ra Miran gives another awesome performance. But foremost, hats off to Kim Seulgi for her wonderfully unconventional performance. Although the character doesn't seem so heavy physically, Jisook is a character with a lot of inner struggle and emotional responsibility.

All in all, Highway Family is not only a well-executed movie; it’s also a movie weighted with reality struggles and driven by outstanding performances from all the cast.

Mediocre movie with beautiful visuals.

If you have ever watched a Hallmark romance movie in your life, this movie follows the same template: a rural location, a farm, a deteriorating family business, a lovely and kind FL with a big dream, and a city-guy ML with an attitude. And this one is not far from predictable plots and conflicts as well.

This movie centers around a coffee farm; a remote and beautiful place that becomes the background of a bland love story. It’s basically romanticizing coffee by explaining the plots by the acidity, sweetness, saltiness, bitterness, and sourness of coffee and relating them to life situations. However, while the plots progress nicely, they lack anything outstanding or compelling. ML and FL do have their own backstories, but they aren’t strong enough, making their characters lack depth. Their romance felt rushed and dull as well. Although JC Santos and Barbie Imperial both performed well, their chemistry is just okay.

I felt like I’d been dragged till the end of the movie without any memorable plots other than the breathtaking backdrop of the mountains throughout the movie. Apparently, the beautiful visuals couldn’t save this movie. As a whole, this movie is not bad, but it’s not good either.

Love alone is not enough

When it comes to romance films, people would usually expect something sweet and fluffy, idealized love stories filled with charm and beauty. However, "The Loved One" flips that idea on its head by presenting a more grounded and honest portrayal of relationships. This film strips away the typical romantic glamor to reveal a core truth: love alone does not guarantee a successful relationship.

At its heart, the story of Eric and Ellie is a familiar one, but its power lies in the way it is told. The story unfolds in a non-linear way, shifting between past memories and present realities. This approach allows viewers to see the complexity, depth and growth of their relationship over time, rather than a straightforward romantic arc. I’ve watched quite a few films by Irene Villamor, and generally, her movies really embrace the complexities and imperfections that define human relationships. This film carries on this theme, as Villamor captures the intimate moments that reveal both vulnerability and strength within the couples, portraying love as something that is both beautiful and challenging.

In my opinion, the film’s visual storytelling is particularly superb. Through subtle, quiet performances by Jericho Rosales and Anne Curtis, emotions are conveyed with remarkable depth without relying heavily on dialogue. Many scenes depend solely on visuals to portray the characters' inner struggles and emotions, creating an immersive and genuine experience.

Overall, "The Loved One" stands out not only because it is beautifully written, thoughtfully acted, and visually compelling, but also because it confronts the realities of love and relationships with honesty and sensitivity. It’s not your typical Valentine’s Day flick that makes you all warm and fuzzy inside. It's the film that offers a poignant and relatable experience that resonates long after the film ends.

Uplifting. Positive. Honest.

I had no idea how a show about running could be so therapeutic until I found this gem. It’s by far the most heartwarming variety show I’ve ever watched. The concept is pretty simple: five girls go running together, get some healing through running on the beautiful running courses, bond with each other, and reflect on their past lives. I love how this show used running terms like pace, obstacle, recovery, and finish line as metaphors, relating to the ups and downs of life.

The scenery and the beauty shots are so calming. The motivational and introspective theme is very impactful. This show subtly highlighted how a good support system can really help someone get through any difficult time and move forward through the concept of running. The girls developed sincere friendships through this program. The deep talk about the struggles they faced elevated their bond above simple acquaintance. Understanding that even with just one person cheering, it manages to uplift someone to keep going on the adventure.

An okay movie to kill some free time

It's a sport-themed high school GL. Although the film doesn't focus heavily on sports, the developing relationship between two players serves as an important subplot. As they navigate the challenges of sports, school, and personal struggles, their feelings for each other deepen, leading to tender moments and heartfelt confessions. The romance between the two players adds a layer of sweetness and vulnerability to the story.

This film addresses the critical issue of sexual harassment within women's sports, a topic that deserves significant attention. While this film manages to highlights the concern, it doesn't quite provide a tidy resolution to the issue. The absence of proper action against it might be a deliberate choice by the director, but it somehow leaves me with a sense of unease, as the characters' struggles with harassment are not fully resolved.

While this movie has good story, the character development is underwhelming. Although the main characters are likable and relatable, their growth throughout the film feels limited. Despite the intriguing premise and the potential for emotional depth, the movie's ending is predictable. Overall, it is a pleasant movie.

A lakorn that's not overly complicated.

Out of the many Channel 7 lakorns I've watched so far, "The Gift" is probably one that’s not bogged down by overly complex plots. While the core story is not far from the typical lakorn we’ve seen in the market so far - the rich/poor trope, family issues, inheritance war, the typically annoying envious villains, some revenge and misunderstanding, but the overall story is not convoluted and with a good injection of supernatural element.

On top of that, this series features an investigative element that brings in suspense but is not too different to distinguish it from the typical straightforward conflict between good and evil commonly found in lakorn. But this blend makes the series feel more multifaceted, making it something interesting to watch despite its longer episodes.

While romance might not be the core of the series, the romantic plots play quite an important role, adding layers of warmth and humor to the story. However, the fake-to-real couple trope feels a bit rushed and unpolished. This series is the first collaboration between Thanwa Suriyajak and Garn Nuttacha, but their chemistry doesn't quite ignite. Even though some romantic scenes are designed to be funny and awkward, the way they deliver those feels forced and comes across as really awkward. On the other hand, the second couple (Arnon and Som) has a more natural chemistry with their own cute and entertaining interactions. And the third couple (Dech and Ameena), they’re just fillers that don’t give much significance to the story. Even without them, I think the series would progress just fine.

In short, "The Gift" is an enjoyable lakorn that blends family drama, romance, and a touch of the supernatural pretty well. Its interesting character dynamics and thoughtful pacing make it a good choice for fans seeking a lakorn that's less dramatic.

Unapologetic gore horror with a weak script.

“Omukade” is a film that plunges viewers into a relentless and intense thrill ride, filled with graphic violence and in a claustrophobic setting. The plot takes place inside a mine cave, where the dark and cramped space skillfully creates the atmosphere of dread and exhaustion. This backdrop is the ideal setting for the film's main source of terror: a giant, man-eating centipede based on Japanese folklore. The creature itself is regarded as unsettling, designed to provoke maximum discomfort and fear in the audience, especially if you have entomophobia (fear of insects) or chilopodophobia (fear of centipede).

While the movie excels in creating a tense and disturbing ambiance, it falls short in other critical areas, particularly in storytelling and character development. The script offers minimal depth or growth for its characters, making them feel pretty flat and one-dimensional. While the ensemble cast brings their best performance to the table, the characters' relationships and backstories are heavily sidelined to make room for the next monster attack. The lack of character complexity makes it challenging for me to form a connections or invest emotionally in their fates. Plus, the theme related to war gets lost in the shuffle, overshadowed by the focus on gore and suspense and diminishing the film's overall coherence. Another issue with this film is its cinematography. While the CGI is considered solid and ambitious for a Thai monster film, the erratic, shaky camera movements during action sequences left me feeling dizzy.

Overall, "Omukade" stands out as a chilling, nightmarish horror film that masterfully uses its eerie mine setting and the unsettling creature to create fear. In my opinion, it's a fresh twist on the typical Thai horror style. It suits the taste of fans of extreme creature features and unapologetic gore. But if you are looking for a character-driven story with a deep plot, Omukade isn't the ideal pick.

Cliched, but entertaining and positive.

When it comes to a series that centers on a terminal illness, oftentimes it will revolve around the idea of “living life to the fullest before you die” and tend to be melodramatic. But this series takes a lighthearted approach to the illness and touches on taboo issues, like death and funerals, and injects a comedic tone while still maintaining that core idea. As typical and cliched as this series can be, it stands out for its positive and relatable representation of life's challenges, making it a show that's worth your time.

At first, I was a bit reluctant to dive into this series because the cancer theme hits pretty close to home. I was worried I’d end up bawling. But to my surprise, instead of focusing solely on the illness and its impact on the protagonist and the romance revolving around it, the series delves more into the family dynamic and how interpersonal relationships could impact one’s POV of life. And it shows how the "tough love" parenting shape a person's resilience. Plus, the portrayal of relationships among siblings, spouses, and best friends feels genuine, enriching the emotional texture of the story.

The series strikes a good balance between drama, personal conflict, family struggles, romance, and comedy, all woven together in a good pace and story arc and delivered by a great performance by all cast. As usual, Esther Supreeleela delivers well, showcasing her versatile acting range by seamlessly shifting the mood of her character and driving the emotional highs and lows of the story. Also, the supporting characters and their story arcs play pivotal roles in enriching the plot and making it more entertaining. I personally love the friendship and frenemies’ dynamic between Nim, Nat, Vinny and Opal. They’re annoying and hilarious, yet somehow endearing at the same time.

While the series has its strengths, the romance plot is arguably the least interesting aspect for me. Esther is an actress who can pull off chemistry with any co-star, but sadly, her chemistry with Singto feels pretty weak, making some scenes feel unconvincing and pretty dull. And not to mention that the male lead is portrayed as almost too perfect, lacking the complexities that make him intriguing and realistic. He’s likeable of course, but when he’s a good, polite, kind, optimistic, hardworking, tactful, understanding, helpful, patient, loving, and caring guy, he turns out to be one-dimensional and super boring. Even with some flaws in his backstory, his character development feels flat and fails to create the necessary tension for a gripping romantic arc. I mostly skipped the romance part.

Overall, "My Undying Miracle" offers something refreshing while still having the clichés of illness-themed dramas. Despite some minor flaws, the series remains entertaining and emotionally resonant. It's a promising reminder to cherish every moment, embrace laughter even in tough times, and carry the spirit of connection wherever life leads us. So far the series is entertaining, but could’ve been better. I would've liked it better and rated it higher if the ML had more colors to his character.

Good concept, weak script

Masks have long been associated with mystery and fear across different cultures worldwide. The idea of hiding one's true identity behind a mask taps into fundamental psychological fears, making them the perfect tool for horror movies to evoke a sense of unease and terror in the audience. In this film, the concept of Phi Ta Khon, a traditional masked festival in Thailand, is used as a backdrop for the supernatural horror elements of the film. The spooky masks donned by the dancers bring an air of mystery and dread to the narrative, setting up a potentially frightening experience. However, despite the promising concept and the potential for a frightening tale, the film falls short in its script and execution.

The story manages to build suspense and delivers a few jumpscares, but the plot, though promising, fails to fully capitalize on the great concept at its core. It feels flat and lacks the necessary depth to truly engage viewers in the film's world. I think the biggest drawbacks are the lack of solid character development, plot holes, and some weird plot points. Despite the plot twist, the movie struggles to maintain its tension as the story unfolds. As a horror film enthusiast, I found the twist to be rather predictable and unsurprising. The changes in tone and focus during the second half throw off the film's atmosphere, making it lose the momentum it built with the creepy Phi Ta Khon in the first half. I sighed and yawned quite a few times.

Mos Panuwat delivers a good performance, showcasing a different side of his acting abilities from his previous BL roles. However, his portrayal lacks the intense emotions needed to really draw you in. In contrast, Diana Flipo delivers an average performance, which doesn't really highlight her best work to this point.

Overall, "Ta Khon: The Cursed Mask" is a decent horror film that falls short of utilizing its great concept to its full potential. While the idea of blending tradition, ancestral beliefs, and horror elements is intriguing, the uneven story flow and lack of proper character development hinder its overall impact. If you're looking for a genuinely scary and emotionally gripping experience, you might end up feeling let down.

Leveled up Panor, but with loose plots. Still a good watch regardless.

In this sequel, viewers are introduced to an older and fierce Panor. This time, Panor is set to start a new journey as a college student, with big dreams of becoming a teacher. However, fate has other plans, and she must deal with threats coming from all directions.

“Let’s see whose black magic is stronger, yours or mine?” This line basically sums up the core conflict of this film. While the idea is strong enough to drive the story, the story structure is somewhat loose and uneven, making it difficult to fully immerse oneself in the narrative. The battle of black magic somehow lacks intensity. Plus, certain characters are not fully fleshed out either, leaving gaps in their development. And while the plot twist is good, it doesn't quite pack the punch needed for a standout climax. Despite this, the film manages to maintain a sense of intrigue and suspense all the way through.

As this film shows a more mature and ruthless version of Panor, Cherprang's portrayal of Panor has also leveled up, showcasing more polished acting that adds depth and complexity to the role. It's amazing to witness how well she has embodied this infamous role, solidifying her place in the horror genre. Alongside her, Pimma delivers a commendable performance, despite being a relatively newcomer to the scene.

The trademark of the "Art of the Devil" films is of course its gruesome and brutal gore scenes. While this sequel certainly delivers on that front with some stomach-churning graphic scenes, I found some of gore to be predictable compared to its predecessors. Fans who are expecting the new level of shock value might find this sequel a bit disappointing. Still, the film is well-made with great direction, improved CGI, and fantastic makeup FX that really bring the world of black magic to life on the screen. Plus, it's simply satisfying to see how the bullies got bullied back.

In conclusion, "Panor 2" is a good sequel that continues to explore the dark and twisted world of its titular character. The upgraded version of Panor, combined with strong performances from the cast, elevates the film. While the loose storyline and toned-down gore may leave some viewers wanting more, the overall execution is still praiseworthy. Despite its flaws, this sequel is still good watch regardless. With a more focused narrative and deeper character development, the future installments could be even more captivating.

Not a bad series, but a bit underdeveloped and rushed.

When you have 3 couples, some conflicts to solve, and villains to deal with within 18 episodes and 45 min runtime for each episode, the outcome would be either underwhelming or rushed or a mix of both. While this series is not exactly bad, it lands somewhere between underdeveloped and rushed.

As Mik and Pinkploy's first full series together, Beauty Reborn shows promise. I’ve been looking forward to seeing them together ever since their brief scene in “Warden of the Sky.” While Mik-Pinkploy have good chemistry, it’s a bit overshadowed by the lack of development in their characters and relationship. Plus, the relationship development for the other couples (Nam-Baicha and Wayo-Sarach) feels a bit rushed, missing the depth and complexity that would really draw you in. If only they explored their dynamic more properly, this series could really shine.

There's also a significant improvement in terms of production quality. Compared to Ch7’s 2022-2023 series, I’d say this series shows a more polished look and quality. But in terms of story, the title seems to imply a transformation theme, but the actual plot seems to stray a bit from that expectation. It focused more on the political issues within the company, which kind of leaves the overall story feeling a bit underwhelming.

Overall, Beauty Reborn is a decent drama with noticeable shortcomings that prevent it from reaching its full potential. Sure, it has its ups and downs, but I found it pretty enjoyable. Honestly, I like this series for its unique approach, especially now that Ch7 is more open to including LGBTQ+ couples/stories. Unlike many Ch7 dramas that rely heavily on intense conflict and over-the-top villains, Beauty Reborn finds a nice middle ground that is neither too intense nor too lackluster. The conflicts are typical but not too much to handle, so you won’t get a headache from all the heavy plots.

Well-executed crime drama

Crime shows about serial killers are pretty common, but this series brings a fresh angle. The killer leaves behind a knitted piece with every victim that holds clues about who’s next. The well-paced plot and intricately woven with twists and the clues really engage the viewer to piece together the mystery. Plus, having an autistic character adds an extra layer of depth to the story.

Bua Nalinthip deserves praise for her performance. She really breaks her rom-com leading lady persona and proves her acting ability. She totally nails the role, with all her facial expressions, eyes, and actions, making Sky a character that viewers can root for and empathize with.

When it comes to the crime genre, Thai series are more about the drama and don't usually pay attention to the forensic part. But I’m glad this series did it right. Even though the autopsy scenes are not as high-tech and detailed as the CSI, the meticulous portrayal of forensic procedures and all the nitty-gritty details adds a sense of realism to the series. I love that the director is generous with insert shots in the autopsy scene. Some murder scenes are quite graphic, but damn, I love it.

If there’s any flaw about this series, it’s the lack of emotional depth of the male lead. Although he is portrayed as a skilled detective, his character development falls short in comparison to the female lead, making his character the least emotionally engaging.

With its well-executed storytelling, standout performances, and realistic crime/forensic scenes, The Yarns has solidified its place as a must-watch for fans of crime and suspense genre.
