I've always assumed that coughing up blood is so common because it's a 'clean' (perhaps a little romantic, too? Think tuberculosis in 19th century European literature) way of portraying serious injury or illness? In a lot of cases, realistic portrayal of the character's condition would be very messy. Thus the symbolic blood coughing...

As for curing someone by making them lose some blood, it's standard practice in traditional medicines, and in Chinese medicine in particular there's plenty of theory to back it up. Just think of it as a culture thing?

Haha, this has got to be one of my least favorite genres. Japanese food dramas often tell stories that are very much my cup of tea, but having grown up mainly in germany, I can't say I like the food in japan all that much. There are exceptions, of course, but seeing characters have a foodgasm over something that I personally find edible at best is a bit of a turnoff, honestly.

This said, I really like stories focusing on family, personal growth etc, something food dramas are great at, so it's a love-hate relationship, I suppose :'D

Kiyomori may have been the first taiga since Shinsengumi that set me in full-blown fangirling mode, hahah. I enjoyed it immensely.

The first taiga I watched from the beginning to the end was Tobu ga gotoku from 1990, and I //think// I haven't skipped a single taiga drama entirely since then?... ended up dropping quite a few halfway, though (notably Yoshitsune, Hana Moyu and Segodon: I didn't even last 10 episodes...).

Some favorites: Mori Motonari, Shinsengumi, Atsuhime, Yae no Sakura (first half only) and last year's Naotora.

Aw yes, I love HiGH&LOW. I got into this franchise pretty much by accident and honestly didn't expect it to be my cup of tea, but it turned out to be such a fun ride.

Props for Kizzy, too. This said, I really wish it handled other female characters better. Insufficient female representation is my only serious problem with this series.

well it is based on a book from 2007 so it depends on where they leave off. The ratings have been pretty good…
I'm all for a sequel, but if they did make a second season, it would have to be a completely new story. Black Pean is loosely adapted from Black Pean 1988, which is the first part of a trilogy so technically the original story doesn't end here, but Tokai doesn't appear in the other two books. Seeing how TBS's Black Pean is clearly a Nino drama, I kind of doubt they will bother with the continuation.

Okay wow, I think I just died a little at shows from the 2000s being referred to as 'oldies'... Great article, though! The idea itself is really cool, too; I'd love to see something similar for Chinese and Japanese productions.

Loved him in Karei naru Ichizoku! I'm really looking forward to the Kensatsugawa no Zainin movie, too. (P.S. I think he's supposed to play Mogami, not the newbie Okino? Though he probably would make a better Okino if he were younger...)

Whoa. I wasn't familiar with the original book series (or even the author) so the supernatural twist at the end of the first episode really caught me by surprise--but in a good way? This could be fun!

Loved the first episode. Good writing, good acting; I really hope they keep it up. Ichikawa Mikako's character is my favorite, but the entire main cast is doing a damn fine job, really. Can't wait for next week!

They're all very handsome, talented kids, but Takeuchi Ryoma's 1st place in particular really made me smile. Nothing makes me happier as a fan than watching actors who debuted in tokusatsu grow professionally and have successful careers. <3

Tbh, it took me a while to warm up to this series (about 10 eps, similar to when I was watching Drive), but now I'm glad I gave it a chance.

One of my favorites this season! I love the cast; everyone's doing a damn fine job. Although... I should probably take a break from Ikeido's business dramas because most of the time it's painfully obvious what plot development is coming next, and I haven't even read the novel yet, lmao. Still, it's a very enjoyable show all the same.
