Maybe it's because I almost never watch romance dramas, but I actually enjoy this trope... :D Especially in the mystery and/or comedy genre. My current fave has to be Detective Zero: an experienced cop suddenly loses 20 years worth of memories, and in a state of confusion, ends up hiding this fact from his colleagues. The protagonist's amnesia is used mostly as a comic plot device (obv. not recommended if that makes you uncomfortable), and as such it's handled quite masterfully.

I found several movies to look forward to as well, thank you! I'm especially interested in Between the Seasons, Our Body, Perfect Man; a few others depending on mood.

And being a cat lady myself, I have yet to grow tired of cat movies, so 12 Cats, too :'D

Wow, seeing all these titles in one place has just made me realize that I'm planning to watch (or at least check out) almost everything scheduled for this season that isn't romance... xDb Thank you for compiling the list!

Definitely watching all the sequels, especially Aibou, Doctor-X, Jikou Keisatsu, Chou no Rikigaku (and the spinoff Wave of Evil, but only if Fumino Kimura's character is in it as well. I can't remember right now).

Mixed feelings about the new Sherlock to be honest, like, do we really need another Sherlock Holmes adaptation with conventional male cast? Will probably still give it a chance, though. Maybe the creators have something up their sleeves. C:

it came down to time, I binged watched 5 seasons of doctor x for this, so after that my brain was on medical overload…
I see, that's valid xD When you feel up to it again, maybe try Kounodori? It's completely different from Doctor-X (but also very good!) and has a *beautiful* piano OST.

This list is great, thank you! Huge props for the mainland Chinese recommendations in particular, I've been looking for some :D For some reason I thought there'd be more Japan recs? I guess it all comes down to the availability of English subs in watchable quality...

Hi, I can't find this drama's page here on mydramalist? By the way, there is sismance or yuri in this drama?
There isn't much female bonding, unfortunately, but in addition to the SP, there is also a touch of very nice, positive portrayal of women being supportive of each other in the main tv series. The characters don't get much interaction afterwards, though; a pity considering that the height difference is adorable.

Compared to the recent Arashi editorial, it would appear I have barely seen any KAT-TUN dramas in full... huh. The drama version of Yamaneko with Kame is a huge fave, though!

Yesss I love this franchise a lot, can't count how many times I've seen the tv series. Sumire <3 The theatrical movies have always struck me as 40 minutes worth of script unnecessarily stretched to twice that length so I don't go back to the films quite so often, but funnily enough, I've just re-rewatched the first three the other day... I didn't remember most of the movie-only cast very well so I had a few 'OH?' moments, lol. This happens a lot when you re-watch 90s~2000s productions but it's always funny to see some faces that are big names in the industry today.

Thank you for finding the time to research and write this article. I'm not into the romance genre myself, nor am I familiar with this particular franchise, but as a queer person, lgbtq in the media is a topic of immense interest to me. I really enjoyed reading your analysis, and I'm curious to see how exactly the sequels compare. Looking forward to part 2!

Great article! I have a few feel-good shows and movies I like to re-watch when I'm feeling down, but it has never occurred to me to prepare a personal drama 'first aid kit'... Love the idea.

I don't have a list (yet!), but I usually turn to my all-time favorite comedies, I think? The kind of shows that are still top-notch quality fun even when you pretty much know them by heart, like Bayside Shakedown.

I assume tokusatsu was left out on purpose, but I would still like to recommend Keita Amemiya's GARO series to everyone who enjoys epic sword fights in fantasy setting! It's not quite like wuxia, perhaps, but the action choreography is great. Unlike most of tokusatsu it's definitely not a franchise aimed at children, either.

Thank you for this list! I've been a little too excited for the second season Himura Hideo no Suiri to have a proper look at the summer lineup until now, but it doesn't look bad at all! There seem to be quite a few new medical dramas? From the titles on the list, Heaven sounds like something that might be very much up my alley. And then the new Ultraman season sounds really good, too~
