I completely understood what you were saying. But conversely, Tanwa saw Trin as this uptight outsider and approached him, encouraging him to come out of his shell. He made Trin stop taking himself so seriously. Look at when he told him let's go to the rain, "We'll only get wet, we won't die." He started showing Trin a deeper side to his emotions because he contains so much interiority. Perhaps from his trauma, being a hippy, his mother. He and Trin were properly established. It's only when Trin tried to comfort Tanwa and the latter rejected it that Trin decided he doesn't want a one-sided only comforts relationship. I completely disagree with the idea that Victor x Trin's intimacy was better or more established.

I expected death or prison or exile but this was so so so much worse. My heart still aches in the best way only a well written story can do. What makes it even sadder is they didn't even get to say goodbye to each other in person.

I completely disagree on the chemistry between Trin and Victor. At no point did I ever actually feel any sort of attraction from Trin to Victor. And once you watch the sugar stirring scene, you'll see why Trin and Tanwa are combustible compared to Victor's juvenile crush. Also, that's his professor. Ew.
