This will haunt me forever
I came into this expecting a horror story that somehow devolves into lakorn territory making everything convoluted or ridiculous. But the story took itself seriously from the first episode and kept the same gravitas all through. While some world building elements leave more questions than answers, I'd say that's ignorance of Thai shamanism/mythology on my end than the show's problem.
The endgame being Khemjira's survival didn't erase the stakes within the game. Ramphueng was an actual threat and did cause harm making her simultaneously frightful and in need of compassion. I do love that the story didn't feel the need to add dumb fight sequences but some choices left a lot to be desired. (A CGI boar comes to mind).
PS. Thailand decriminalised homosexuality in 1956. But only made gay marriage legal in 2025. Adoption by queer couples there is also legalised by the Marriage Equality Act. You see world? That's how you do it 🥰 (But really Thailand, let single people adopt kids too).

Intense, Sizzling, Confounding
It's not often such a brief production leaves me speechless. The story follows Odajima, a young Yakuza grunt who's tasked with accompanying Kataoka while he's on the run from people targeting him. Kataoka is the adopted son of the Yakuza big gun who's recently passed away. While Odajima has been tasked with assisting him, he also has a secret mission to kill Kataoka. The set pieces of this show are eerily beautiful, showing a haunting visage of the seedy underbelly of different parts of Japan. Kataoka and Odajima have fascinating chemistry because O wants to kill K just as much as he's enthralled by him. Kataoka is enigmatic, flamboyant, alluring and Odajima seems to hate and love him for it.
Through their few adventures, Odajima comes to terms with what it means to have a reason to live. And how just fine the line is between passion and hatred.

For those who are here for vibes not plot
I went into this not knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. As someone who enjoys Motorsport, I thought there'd be something a bit more intense for me with the bike racing but it turned out to be a plot vehicle. Trying to make sense of the larger story is an exercise in futlity. You'd be better off trying to understand why there are still flat-earthers in the year of Beyonce 2025. Anyway, it's a nice rompy ride that doesn't overstay its welcome. The ending was rather abrupt and it tries to tackle themes of pride, school pressure and sexual assault—and we'll leave it at, it tried. It's very rewatchable since it doesn't require a lot of dense attention and the set designs are quite pretty. Overall, not the worst I've experienced, not the best either. Was this review helpful to you?
