So the aunt unwittingly brings back the niece she switched out and puts her back in her proper place... now she's having a heck of a time removing her lol. Poetic Justice. It's just a shame WR has to fight tooth and nail to keep her position with her own family out for her blood. But I love watching her prove herself again and again to everyone who doubts her. Gaining more recognition and climbing even higher.
It's like an entire life and world were ripped away from her so now she has to accelerate every step, cementing her place and creating an identity that's all her own. I can't wait to see how the family reacts when they learn her true identity. ALL the family. Lol, there are so many of them who have threatened her... 😅
I read the vague synopsis, saw the high opening numbers, and jumped in. This was a bit of a disjointed film to me. I actually enjoyed the kind of Indie Horror feel the beginning had, and then the older people decked out with artillery chasing the alien was fun.
But the monster reveal had me scratching my head… and then the “alien” reveal. I honestly feel like this would have been so much better if it had kept it’s campy vibe, not taken itself so seriously in the end (the mourning a fallen empire, the search for a murdered prince to resurrect him with an alien heart, another alien spacecraft crash, aliens we thought were dead are alive, and the philosophical conversation about faith and dreams amongst the aliens), and kept the aliens a mystery that could be explored if they made a part 2. As it is… the most thrilling parts starred Hoyeon and In Sung in action.
And In Sung has been wrapped in Zirconium Plot Armor because what the heck lol. (I’m not complaining though!) How they got Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender to do this script… o.o
I think it was entertaining. Even if the ride was a bit questionable. But I wouldn’t watch it again.

It wasn't a punishment for her crimes though. It was a reinforcement of the plight of women back then. She was discarded by her father and brother. Because of /their/ actions, the actions of the men in her own family and husband, she became a victim of /their/ failure. Her previous actions were horrible, yes, and we didn't somehow magically view her as a "good" person in the end.
But they weren't so much trying to play with the viewers emotions than to show again how she, as a woman, had no control over her existence. She was thrown away like trash, her money stolen, and her personal maid murdered so that the men in her family could save their own skins. This could have happened to any other "good" and "pure" woman in her situation. It could have happened to LX. Though I can totally see why you could see it as being punishment.
And I just realized Z and JQ both are a bit emotionally stunted. Grabbing at the things they want and taking them…

Oh I totally agree. I was just trying to compare how much the maids have learned in the time Z has been gone. They couldn't identify one character and now they're helping LX do legal research. And they squeezed in learning between chores. I just love how their confidence in their own capabilities has grown.
And Z dishing out what she's been tortured with is exactly her character profile. She has no emotional regulation because she had to hold everything in all those years so she just lashes out when she can. You're right in it not being an excuse but it can definitely be a pattern with some people.

The unwavering belief these girls have in Lanxiang AND each other is one of my favorite parts of this drama. The girls have all carved out a family with each other that extends beyond the confines of their homes. These connections are for life. (And building a network of women they could rely on would have been priceless in that time) I especially loved seeing all the girls READING by candlelight. LX gave them courage to learn, but they along with Yuchan guiding them, took the initiative.
I'm still waiting for Zhao to take back some control and learn to read. I think she'd feel much more empowered if she could read her own account books, any book really (look how far the other girls have gotten in the time Z has been gone). In the scene btw her and LX, it was like her eyes had been opened to a whole new world, she was hungry for that new window of independence. Imagine if she had read those words herself. She’d feel like she could rule the empire. Which is a scary thought...
I wonder if Ji'er will tell LX that JQ showed up and turned the brothel UPSIDE DOWN to find her. But right now he doesn't need any extra points, I just want to see LX and Ji'er together lol.
