The novel was pretty hollow to me, in my opinion too...which was why I was super surprised that they chose it to become a series.
Totally agree with the lack of the background of the characters. It's hard to really understand their actions without knowing anything about them. They should have laid out why Ongsa/Alpha's family had to live separately for (at least) a year, and that was never spelled out. Nothing was mentioned about Aylin's parents either. Because they did not do that in the beginning, I didn't expect much in terms of background and so I guess I wasn't as "disappointed".
Really upset about Marvin's interruption too! Why would you create Aylin's character (not in the novel) and have the most vulnerable/pivotal moment be stolen just like that? *Sigh*
