O see a different possibility. he might have said something that that spunded like a threat to the FL to disguise his intention. What if he recognized the suspect and to conceal the fact that he was about to make an arrest, he said that?

But the political intrigue, all the plots, all the masks the characters wear, their deviousness... that's what makes it worth watching. The plots within plots, not knowing the motivation of characters, the insidious ways of ingratiating themselves and seemingly bowing their heads, while plotting, plotting, plotting away - I found all of that delightful and worth the watch. Granted, there's more romance in the novel, and I'd have been happy to see that transposed to the screen, but even so I still find it to be one of the best Chinese dramas I've ever watched. Of course, though, everyone's entitled to their opinion and free to express it.

Especially given his trump card. Because he knows they can't do it. but he wants to know who's got the balls to try.

I found Wan'er's character to be more interesting in the novel. She's plugged in to everything that's going on socially and politically and an astute advisor for Fan Xian. She's pretty sharp and supportive.

Maybe this one should be marked as spoiler? No break up, but you can feel her angst between their meetings, for understandable reasons. It is a great drama though. Thanks for recommending it. I binge-watched it yesterday.

But I'll add that the drama is really interesting.
